Final Drive and Travel Motor - Remove

Start By:

  1. Remove the final drive sprocket. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive Sprocket - Remove and Install" in this manual.
  2. Remove the travel brake valve. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Counterbalance Valve (Travel) - Remove" in this manual.

Note: The final drive sprocket does not need to be removed prior to removal of the final drive. If the final drive is going to be disassembled, the sprocket should be removed.

Note: The procedure to remove the right hand final drive and the procedure to remove the left hand final drive is identical. The procedure that follows is for one of the final drives.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Attach two lifting straps and a hoist to final drive (1) , as shown. It may be necessary to adjust the lifting straps for correct balance of the final drive.

  1. Oil will drain from the hose assembly (2) and hose assembly (3) when the hoses are disconnected from the travel motor. Position an oil pan under the travel motor in order to contain the hydraulic oil.

  1. For assembly purposes, put identification marks on hose assembly (2) and hose assembly (3) . Disconnect hose assembly (2) and hose assembly (3) from the travel motor. Put a plug in the end of each hose assembly. Plugs prevent oil loss and plugs keep contaminants out of the hydraulic system.

  1. Use Tooling (A) to remove bolts (4) and the washers that hold the final drive to the undercarriage frame assembly. Carefully remove the final drive and the travel motor from the undercarriage frame assembly. The combined weight of the final drive and the travel motor is 714 kg (1575 lb).
