Normal Mode is Mode 0. Normal Mode is used during normal engine operation. When the main display module is in Normal Mode, the Main Display Module and the Gauge Cluster Modules show the following conditions to the operator.

  • Proper operation of the Caterpillar Monitoring System is shown. A Self Test is performed. During the Self Test, all of the elements of the display and gauges briefly operate. For more information on this subject, see Testing And Adjusting, "System Self Test".

  • A value for system condition is shown. The Main Display Module continuously monitors engine systems. The needles in the Gauge Cluster Modules indicate a normal operating condition when the needles are pointing straight up.

  • The system shows if an engine problem exists. When an abnormal condition (problem) exists, the corresponding Alert Indicator flashes and the Action Alarm sounds. For information on this subject, see Systems Operation, "Warning Operation".

  • The system shows if a diagnostic code exists. The Main Display Module continuously checks for diagnostic codes in the Caterpillar Monitoring System and the engine Electronic Control Module (ECM). When a diagnostic code is detected, the Display Area (4) shows "SERV CODE" and the Shutdown/Diagnostic alert indicator lights. For more information, see the Electronic Troubleshooting Guide for the engine that is being serviced.

Operator Modes

In Normal Mode, the six digit display area (4) is used to show various engine system conditions to the operator (Operator Modes). A list of possible operator modes is shown in Testing And Adjusting, "Modes Of The Main Display Module".

When the Main Display Module enters Normal Mode, the default condition is shown on the six digit display area. This condition is normally the engine rpm.

A "SCROLL" switch is available to the operator when the parameters for the operator are available. The "SCROLL" switch connects to one of the uncommitted switch inputs (operator switch inputs) of the Main Display Module. See the Electrical System Schematic for the engine that is being serviced in order to determine the uncommitted switch that is being used. The "SCROLL" switch will cause the six digit display area to scroll through the available parameters. Releasing the "SCROLL" switch will stop the scrolling on the currently shown parameter.

Mode numbers are not displayed when the parameters for the operator are scrolling. The most common modes are shown in the following list.

Service Meter Mode - There is a value on the six digit display area. The symbol for the Service Meter is ON.

DC System Voltage - There is a value on the six digit display area. The symbol for Volts is ON.

Digital Tachometer Mode - There is a value on the six digit display area. The symbol for RPM is ON.

Diagnostic Scrolling Mode - Diagnostic Scrolling Mode

For more information on Operator Modes, see the corresponding mode in Systems Operation.

Service Meter Parameter

Illustration 2g00298101

Display Area

The parameter for the Service Meter is shown. The engine ECM records the total number of operating hours. This information is passed to the Main Display Module through the CAT data link. The total operating hours are shown on the six digit display area. The symbol for the Service Meter is ON in order to indicate that the display is functioning as a Service Meter. The value is continuously updated when the engine is operating. Use the "SCROLL" switch in order to toggle between the Tachometer and the parameters for the Service Meter.

DC System Voltage Parameter

Illustration 3g00553288

Display Area

The parameter for the System Voltage is shown. When the Unit indicator shows "VOLTS", the system voltage is displayed on the six digit display area. The Main Display Module will receive information about the System Voltage from the + battery terminal.

Digital Tachometer Parameter

Illustration 4g00298698

Display Area

The parameter for the Tachometer is shown. When the unit indicator shows "RPM", the engine speed is displayed on the six digit display area. The Main Display Module receives engine speed information directly from the magnetic pickup sensor signal. Use the "SCROLL" Switch to toggle between the parameters for the Tachometer and parameters for the Service Meter.

Diagnostic Scrolling Parameter

(2) Second Display

(3) Module identifier (MID)

(4) Service code indicator "SERV CODE"

(5) Component identifier (CID)

(6) Failure mode identifier (FMI)

Note: This mode is often used as an operator mode. In order to determine the mode number for the engine that is being serviced, see the Mode Chart on the Electrical System Schematic.

Diagnostic Scrolling mode allows the service personnel or an operator to see Service Codes that were stored by the Main Display Module. These Service Codes are also seen when the Main Display Module is in the Service Mode. The Service Code in this mode can not be cleared. The Service Code can not be placed "on-hold".

The Service Codes momentarily scroll on the display area upon entering the Scrolling Mode. The MID is shown first as each Service Code is shown for about one second. The corresponding CID and the corresponding FMI is shown second for about two seconds. "End" appears when the last Service Code has been shown. The Service Codes are again shown. The display shows "- - -" when the Main Display Module has no Service Codes.

The indicator for the service code "SERV CODE" functions as a fault present indicator in Scrolling Mode. The fault that has caused a Service Code to be shown currently is present when the SERV CODE indicator is ON. When the "SERV CODE" indicator is OFF, the fault is not present, but the fault has previously occurred.
