The Caterpillar Monitoring System notifies the operator of an immediate problem or an impending problem with various engine systems. The Warning operation begins when the main display module detects a control system problem. Switches, sensors and the engine ECM provide information to the Main Display Module. The warning information consists of the elements that are listed below.

  • An open switch is provided. When a condition exceeds the trip point of the switch, the switch opens.

  • A sensor signal is provided. This sensor signal exceeds the trip point limits. The Main Display Module determines the limits.

  • Abnormal condition detection by the engine ECM is provided. The abnormal conditions are communicated over the CAT data link to the main display module.

Note: The trip points of the engine ECM can be modified. This modification is done through the Electronic Service Tool (ET).

The Main Display Module receives the information. The Main Display Module then processes the information.

The result of the processing is displayed on the Alert Indicators of the main display module. Also, an Alarm sounds if an abnormal condition exists. The items that are listed below are warning indication functions:

  • Flashing of the appropriate Alert Indicator (approximately nine times per second)

  • Sounding the Alarm (on for one second, off for two seconds)

Use the Electronic Service Tool to review the trip points of the Caterpillar Monitoring System. For additional information, refer to Electronic Troubleshooting Guide.
