Product Support Program For Replacing Reach Boom And Me Boom On Certain 320, 320L, 320N, 320S, 322L, 322LN, 322N, 325, 325LN, 325N, 330, 330L And 330LN Excavators Caterpillar

NOTE: This Program can only be administered after a failure occurs. The decision whether to apply the Program is made by the dealer. When reporting the repair, use "PS5532" as the Part Number and "7755" as the Group Number. Use "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.

NOTE: This Revised Service Letter replaces the February 16, 1999 (Revised March 2000) Service Letter. Changes have been made to the Service Claim Allowances.

Problem

The reach boom and ME boom on certain 320, 320L, 320N, 320S, 322L, 322LN, 322N, 325, 325LN, 325N, 330, 330L and 330LN Excavators. Cracks on the side plate, the top plate or the bottom plate at the rear and front baffle areas, or at the welding joint of the central casting to the side plates have been reported on some excavators. The root cause is a manufacturing process involving welds, which will result in unallowable stresses.

Rework Procedure

Replace the cracked boom at the baffle areas or at the welding joint of the central casting by a new one:

1. Record all data for the damaged boom (boom ID plate) in the attached test sheet.

2. Return the test sheet and photos by mail or by fax (32 71 25 28 98) to:
