Location of the oil filter for the Rear Axle (1) Filter Bypass Switch (2) Pressure Sensor (3) Pressure Check Port (4) Oil Filter Housing |
The oil filter for the rear axle is attached to a manifold on the left side and at the back of the axle housing. The oil filter is equipped with a bypass switch (1), a pressure sensor (2), and a pressure test port (3). The oil flows to the differential components enclosed within the axle housing.
Oil from the rear axle charge pump flows to the rear axle oil filter through the inlet of the filter.
During normal operation, the oil flows through the filter elements. The oil flows from the element to the outlets.
If the filter element becomes full of debris, the restriction to the flow of oil causes the pressure to increase. The increased pressure triggers a bypass switch and the oil then bypasses filter. When the oil does not flow through the filter element, debris circulates within the system. The debris that bypasses the filter in the oil will damage the other components in the differential system.
Use correct maintenance to make sure that the filter element does not become full of debris. If the filter element is full of debris, the flow of clean oil to the differential is stopped.
Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU8718, "Oil Filter - Inspect" for instructions on inspection or replacement the oil filter.
Rear Axle Oil Filter Bypass Switch
Illustration 2 | g01405358 |
The bypass switch is a pressure switch that shows whether the filter is plugged. If the filter is plugged, the switch bypasses the filter. The switch is normally open. When electrical power is applied to the switch, the switch closes. When the filter becomes plugged, the pressure of the oil opens the switch which allows the oil to bypass the filter.
The switch is one of the inputs that is used to drive the system indicator on the instrument cluster. The indicator is turned ON when the "Torque Converter Filter Bypass" switch is in the closed position and the temperature of the torque converter oil is greater than
