Safety Section

Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs.

A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person must also have the necessary training, skills, and tools to perform these functions properly.

Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance of a potential hazard.

Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive. Avoid using a tool, a procedure, a work method, or operating technique that is not recommended by Caterpillar. If used, ensure the safety of the operating personnel and others.

Ensure that the product will not be damaged or the product will be made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance, or the repair procedures.

Operation and maintenance of the machine must not occur unless the instructions and warnings in the machines Operation and Maintenance Manual have been read and are understood.

------ WARNING! ------

Accidental machine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the machine.

To avoid accidental machine starting, turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position and remove the key. If the machine is not equipped with a battery disconnect switch, disconnect the battery cables from the battery and tape the battery clamps.

Place a do not operate tag at the battery disconnect switch location to inform personnel that the machine is being worked on.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent injury or death, make sure that the area around the machine is clear of personnel and obstructions before operating the machine.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from improper lifting or blocking.

When a hoist or jack is used to lift any part or component, stand clear of the area. Be sure the hoist or jack has the correct capacity to lift a component. Install blocks or stands before performance of any work under a heavy component.

Approximate weights of the components are shown. Clean all surfaces where parts are to be installed.

General Information

Graphic Color Description

Color-coding of targeted components, or sections of a part, is used to communicate a required action.

This table shows the different colors and what is represented when used in a graphic.

(Blue) The primary component of focus for a particular step. Target or primary component to be installed or removed. Installation implied unless otherwise noted with a symbol.

(CAT® Yellow) Description of parts.

(Yellow) Components placed aside for access, but not removed. Highlighted areas of adjustment, inspection, or special attention.

(Cyan) Special tools or other equipment required for use in a particular step.

(Light Gray) Components used for reference.

(Magenta) Any fastener, retainer, or electrical connector used to install or remove the primary component.

Graphic Symbol Description

This section includes all the symbol graphics used throughout the Visual Service Procedure (VSP), along with a brief description of what the symbol represents.

  3. Inspect the cab strut lock pin orientation. The open end of the lock pin must face towards the front of the machine and away from the fresh air intake. If the lock pin is facing the opposite direction, reverse the orientation of the pin.

Note: Reorienting the lock pin as shown will pose less potential for injury during filter replacement.

Appendix

Raising the Cab

After the Air Conditioner Breather Kit has been installed, cover assembly (5) must be removed prior to lifting the cab. Failure to remove the cover assembly will result in damage to the cover assembly.

Note: Dealers must inform customers: Do Not raise the cab without first removing cover assembly (5). Failure to remove the cover assembly will result in damage to the cover.

Cleaning the Machine

Avoid allowing excess water to enter tube assembly (3) during any cleaning of the machine. Failure to do so could result in contaminating the fresh air filter. If the fresh air filter is contaminated, the filter will need to be replaced.
