G3600 Engines Operating Outdoors (Protection From Environmental Conditions)

Usage:

ENGINESG3606 (3XF),
G3608 (4WF),
G3612 (1YG),
G3616 (4CG) ENGINES

Problem:

G3600 engines operating outside, with no protection from the environment, may have operational problems caused by exposure to water. The problems affect the engine electronics and may cause an engine shutdown.

Solution:

The G3600 engine electronics have been evaluated to identify all problem areas. The problem areas and associated corrective actions are defined below. All engine areas listed below should be inspected IF WATER CONTAMINATION IS SUSPECTED. If the "Observed Problems" are present, the corresponding "Corrective Action" can be taken. The corrective actions listed below are intended to contain the problems on field engines; permanent corrective actions, that may differ from those listed below, are being implemented on production engines.

NOTE: Care must be used when washing an engine, especially with a power washer, to prevent water from entering the electronic enclosures.

NOTE: Annual inspection of all seals is recommended to ensure ongoing protection from environmental conditions.

INSTALLATION OF 171-7102 ENGINE JUNCTION BOX SHIELD ASSEMBLY

1. Put the engine junction box shield assembly in position on the junction box. Check for a good fit, particularly around the lifting boss plate.
2. Remove the engine junction box shield assembly and apply 3M Company Contact Adhesive Sealant No. 847 to the seal on the inside of the shield assembly. Spread the sealant evenly over the seal.
3. Put the engine junction box shield assembly in position on the engine junction box.
4. Remove the former junction box door seal.
5. Starting a the bottom center of the junction box, install the new door seal [approximately 2600 mm (102 in) of 5P-8309 Seal]. The new seal must be tightly bent around the corners for a proper fit. Lightly tap the new door seal with a rubber mallet to fully seat the new seal, especially at the corners.
6. Check the operation of the junction box door.

INSTALLATION OF 171-7103 ESS CONTROL PANEL SHIELD ASSEMBLY

1. Put the ESS control panel shield assembly in position on the ESS control panel. Check for a good fit.
2. Remove the ESS control panel shield assembly and apply 3M Company Contact Adhesive Sealant No. 847 to the seal on the inside of the shield assembly. Spread the sealant evenly over the seal.
3. Put the ESS control panel shield assembly in position on the ESS control panel.
4. Remove the former ESS control panel door seal.
5. Starting a the bottom center of the ESS control panel, install the new door seal [approximately 3500 mm (138 in) of 5P-8309 Seal]. The new seal must be tightly bent around the corners for a proper fit. Lightly tap the new door seal with a rubber mallet to fully seat the new seal, especially at the corners.
6. Check the operation of the ESS control panel door.
