Assembly Procedure

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, thoroughly clean all parts in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Do not use wiping cloths or rags to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. Dirt and other contaminants can damage the precision component. Perform assembly procedures on a clean work surface. Keep components covered and protected at all times.

Note: Lubricate the internal components with the lubricant that is being sealed.

1. Inspect all pump parts for wear. Check the bores in body (1) for wear. Measure the depth of grooves (2) in each bore. if the grooves are deeper than 0.38 mm (0.015 inch), a replacement of the body assembly and gears must be made.

   Note: There are two isolation plates in the bottom of the pump body and two in the top. The isolation plates hold the seal components in place. The isolation plates with the round edges on the outer radius are installed in the bottom of the pump body with the round edge down. The isolation plates with the straight square edges on the radius are installed next to the top flange.

2. Install retainer assembly (3), isolation plates (4), back-up rings (5), and O-ring seals (6) as shown.

3. Install back-up rings (5) and O-ring seals (6). Install retainer assembly (3). Install isolation plates (4) with the rounded edges away from the gears.

4. Install pressure plate (7). The bronze side of pressure plate (7) must be toward the gears.

5. Install idler gear (9) and drive gear (8) in the body.

6. Install pressure plate (10). The bronze side of the pressure plate must be toward the gears.

7. Install retainer assembly (11) on the pressure plate. Install two isolation plates (12) with the straight (square) edge facing the flange.

8. Use Tooling (B) to install lip seal (13) to flange (16). Install the seal with the lip of the seal facing toward the inside of the pump.

9. Use Tooling (A) to install retaining ring (14).

10. Use Tooling (B) to install seal (15) to flange (16). Install the lip seal with the lip of the seal facing away from the pump.

11. Lubricate lip seals (13) and (15) with the lubricant that is being sealed.

12. Install O-ring seals (18) and back-up rings (19) to flange (16).

13. Install O-ring seal (17) to flange (16).

14. Align the marks and install flange (16) to body (1).

15. Install eight bolts (19).

End By:

1. Install the secondary steering pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Gear Pump (Secondary Steering) - Install".
