Top Shafts

Usage:

Remove Top Shafts

1. Remove the top six bolts (1) and loosen the other twelve cover to housing bolts through covers (2).

2. Install two 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolts in the top cover. Fasten a hoist to the top cover.

3. Remove fifteen 1/2"-13 NC bolts (3) and nine 5/8"-11 NC bolts (4). Remove the top cover from the housing. The weight of the cover is 425 lb. (191 kg).

4. Remove three tube assemblies (5) and four bolts (6). Loosen eight bolts (7).

5. Install a 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolt in bearing cap (8). Fasten a hoist to the bearing cap and remove it. The weight of the bearing cap is 180 lb. (81 kg). Remove four bolts (10) and loosen four bolts (9).

6. Install two 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolts in bearing cap (11). Fasten a hoist to the bearing cap and remove it. The weight of the bearing cap is 190 lb. (86 kg).

7. Disconnect tube (14) from cover (12).

8. Remove six bolts (13), cover (12) and the gasket.

9. Remove two tubes (17), eight bolts (15) and two covers (16). Remove the two seal rings and the O-ring seal on each cover.

10. Fasten tool (A) and hoist to the front cover as shown and remove seven bolts (18).

11. Remove tube assembly (19) and remove the front cover. The weight of the front cover is 120 lb. (54 kg).

12. Loosen two bolts (20).

13. Fasten two nylon slings and hoist to the astern shaft (21) as shown. Remove the astern shaft from the housing. The weight of the astern shaft is 920 lb. (419 kg). When the shaft is clear of the housing, remove the large bearing cup (23) and spacer (22) from the rear of the shaft. Remove the small bearing cup and spacer from the front end of the shaft.

14. Disconnect tube (25) from cover (24). Remove six bolts (26), the cover and the gasket.

15. Loosen two bolts (27).

16. Fasten two nylon slings and a hoist to ahead shaft (28) as shown. Remove the ahead shaft (28) from the housing. The weight of the ahead shaft is 920 lb. (419 kg). When the shaft is clear of the housing, remove the large bearing cup (30) and spacer (29) from the rear of the shaft. Remove the small bearing cup and spacer from the front of the shaft.

Install Top Shafts

1. Before the top shafts are installed in the housing clean all of the bearing surfaces.

2. Put the ahead top shaft in position above the housing. Install large spacer (1) and bearing cup (2) on the rear of the shaft. Install the small spacer and bearing cup on the front of the shaft.

3. Hold the bearing cups in position as shown and lower the shaft into position in the housing.

4. Put the astern top shaft in position above the housing. Install small spacer (3) and bearing cup (4) on the front of the shaft. Install the large spacer and bearing cup on the rear of the shaft.

5. Hold the bearing cups in position as shown and lower the shaft into position in the housing.

6. Tighten four bolts (5).

7. Install tube (6), the gasket and cover (7) with six bolts. Do not tighten the bolts. Connect tube (8) to the cover.

8. Install tube (9), the gasket and cover (10) with six bolts. Do not tighten the bolts.

9. Connect the tube (11) to the cover.

10. Install tube assembly (13).

11. Put 7M7260 Liquid Gasket on the contact surfaces of the cover and the housing.

12. Install tool (A) and hoist on the cover and put the cover in position on the housing.

13. Connect tube assembly (13) to elbows (12).

14. Install the seven bolts that hold the cover in place.

15. Install the two seal rings and an O-ring seal on each of two covers (14).

16. Put the covers in position as shown and install the eight bolts that hold the covers in position.

17. Install two tube assemblies (15).

18. Install two 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolts in bearing cap (16). Fasten a hoist to the bearing cap and install it on the housing with four bolts.

19. Tighten four bolts (17).

20. Install a 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolt in bearing cap (18). Fasten a hoist to the bearing cap and install it on the housing with four bolts.

21. Tighten eight bolts (19).

22. Install tube assemblies (20).

23. Install the gaskets and put 7M7260 Liquid Gasket on the contact surfaces of top cover (21) and the front cover.


NOTICE

When top cover (21) is installed be careful not to damage the gaskets on the two rear covers (22).


24. Install two 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolts in top cover (21). Fasten a hoist to the top cover and install it with thirty bolts.

25. Tighten the twelve bolts (23) on two rear covers (22).

Disassemble Top Shafts

start by:

a) remove top shafts

NOTE: Disassembly and assembly procedures and tooling are the same for both the top shafts (ahead or astern).

1. Put the top shaft in position on tool (A).

2. Remove two bolts from the end of the shaft and install two 3/8"-16 NC forged eyebolts as shown.

3. Fasten a hoist to the top shaft. Remove the eight nuts (1) and gear assembly (2). The weight of the gear assembly is 300 lb. (135 kg).

4. Remove twelve bolts (3), the washers and the springs.

5. Fasten a hoist to gear assembly (2) and lift it off the piston.

6. Remove pins (4) from piston (5) and remove the seal from the piston.

7. Put the gear assembly on blocks as shown. Remove ten bolts (6) and hit the end of the shaft to remove the shaft from the gear.

8. Install two 5/8"-11 NC forged eyebolts through the gear and install washers and nuts on them.

9. Fasten a hoist to the gear and lift it off the shaft. The weight of the gear is 170 lb. (77 kg).

10. Remove two bolts (8), retainer (7) and the two seals from the shaft.


NOTICE

The two bearing cones (9) can not be removed without damage to the lower cone.


11. Remove two bearing cones (9) and the bearing cup from the shaft.

12. Install two 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolts in ring (10). Fasten a hoist to the ring and remove it. The weight of the ring is 50 lb. (23 kg).

13. Remove seven discs (11) and six plates (12).

14. Remove two studs (13) 180° apart and install two 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolts.

15. Fasten a hoist to the top shaft. Lift the shaft off the stand and put it in position as shown. Remove four bolts (14) and retainer (15).

16. Use tooling (B) to remove two bearing cones (16) and bearing cup (17). Remove the spacer.

17. Fasten a hoist to the top shaft and hang it vertically. Install tooling (C) as shown. The weight of the top shaft and tooling (C) is 520 lb. (234 kg).

------ WARNING! ------

Do not pull gear (22) with the top shaft in the vertical position.

--------WARNING!------

18. Put the top shaft in the horizontal position and remove gear (22) with tooling (C).

19. Remove the key, the spacer, bearing (20), retainer (21) and plate assembly (18).


NOTICE

Bearing (19) can not be removed from the plate assembly without damage.


20. Remove bearing (19).

Assemble Top Shafts

1. Heat bearing (1) to a maximum temperature of 275°F (135°C). Install the bearing on plate assembly (2).

2. Install spacer (4), key (3), plate assembly (2), outer race (6) and spacer (5) on the top shaft.

3. Install bearing (9) on the shaft.

4. Heat gear (8) to a maximum temperature of 350°F (176°C). Install the gear.

NOTE: The maximum permissible clearance between the top shaft and gear (8) is minus .002 in. (0.05 mm). New gear bore is 4.8730 ± .0005 in. (123.774 mm ± 0.013 mm). New shaft diameter for the gear is 4.8760 ± .0005 in. (123.850 ± 0.013 mm).

5. Install spacer (7).

6. Install bearing cup (13).

7. Heat two bearing cones (11) to a maximum temperature of 275°F (135°C). Install a bearing cone, spacer (12) and a bearing cone on the shaft as shown.

8. Install retainer (10) with four bolts.

9. Install two 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolts in plate assembly (2).

10. Put top shaft in position on tool (A). The weight of the top shaft is 620 lb. (279 kg).

11. Remove the eyebolts and install two studs (14).

12. Install two 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolts in ring (15) and install the ring. The weight of the ring is 50 lb. (23 kg).

13. Install seven discs (16) and six plates (17). Start with a disc and stop with a disc.

14. Install two seals (21) and bearing cup (20).

15. Heat two bearing cones (19) to a maximum temperature of 275°F (135°C). Install the bearing cones as shown.

16. Install retainer (18) with two bolts 180° apart.

17. Put two 5/8"-11 NC forged eyebolts through the gear and install washers and nuts on them. Fasten a hoist to the gear and install it on the shaft with eight bolts.

18. Install seal (23) on piston (22). Install the seal and the ring on twelve pins (24). Install the pins in the piston as shown.

19. Install two 3/8"-16 NC forged eyebolts in shaft (25). Put the shaft assembly in position on the piston.

20. Install twelve springs (26), the washers and the bolts.

21. Fasten a hoist to the gear assembly (27). Put it in position on the top shaft and install eight nuts.

22. Remove two eyebolts and install the two bolts.
