Introduction

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

If the part number is known, or the film is present and a replacement film is being ordered the film can be placed as an emergency order or a stock order.

The order should be placed into the system as a "MEGA" or "DOWN", only if the label is missing. The "MEGA" agreement applies to mining products while the "Down" agreement applies to all other products.

If the film part number is unknown, the full serial number must be provided to your analyst. After placing either style emergency or unknown part number order, contact your order analyst for your expediting needs:

Problem

The ROPS/FOPS FILM can be loosened, damaged, or removed with washing and transporting the machine.

Solution

An interim corrective action has been identified.

Before a new film is applied clean the area with a 50/50% solution of alcohol and water. Wipe the area dry with a lint free cloth. Position the film and apply 67 N (15 lb) of pressure to the film with the use of a dry squeegee or roller. This action will ensure the adhesion of the film before the protective tape is applied. Apply the film at temperatures above freezing.

Option 1

Relocate certification film to the inside of the cab.

Caterpillar products display the ROPS certification film in various locations including inside and outside of the cab. Site-specific conditions may warrant that the film be located in the cab so the film will be better protected from weathering, external abrasion, and effects of power washing.

If the film is moved to the inside of the cab, the film must be placed directly on the ROPS structure and be visible from inside the cab. A (front) and B (second from cab front) posts on the left-hand side of the cab are preferred locations.

For canopy ROPS and external ROPS that are certified, the film must be on the ROPS structure and visible. Locate the film on the ROPS so the film will be protected from weathering, external abrasion, and effects of power washing.

Option 2

The identification film can be covered with 3M product number 84824 - 26.6 cm (10.5 inch) X 10 cm (4 inch) wide.

Preparation for applying the product is to clean the surface with liquid 3M Adhesion Promoter 111 or clean the surface with a pad form 3M Adhesion Promoter 86A. The adhesion promoter should only be used on the outer edges of the area to be taped. MORE IS NOT BETTER.

For areas that this product is not available, an aircraft grade transparent polyurethane protective tape may be used.

Maintenance

Inspect identification film for proper adherence and readability every 500 hours or at regular machine service intervals.
