A change to the supplier of the core plug 218-2317 Plug . There is a difference of tolerance of the core plug and the tolerance in the threaded drain hole in the cylinder block. This causes a small leak path through the sealing joint.
Core plug (1) is the plug that needs to be replaced. Core plug (2) is the replacement core plug.
This is a one hour job. Please submit warranty claims pay class 38.
Solution
- Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant - Change" for the correct procedure.
- Remove core plug (3) from the block (4). Ensure that all the coolant is drained from the block.

- Clean the threaded area in block (4). Use Tooling 5P-3413 Pipe Sealant in order to apply a bead around the thread of new core plug (2). Install the core plug to the block.
- Tighten the core plug to a torque of 30 N·m (22 lb ft).
- Fill the cooling system with coolant. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant - Change" for the correct procedure.
Note: Do not fill the cooling system faster than 5 L (1.3 US gal) per minute in order to avoid air locks.
Note: Air locks in the cooling system may result in engine damage.
- Mark the core plug with a white circle or a dot. This will identify the resealed core plug.
