Schematic of the Blade Angle Left Solenoid

This diagnostic code is associated with the Blade Angle Left solenoid. The FMI 04 means that the ECM has determined that either an open in the circuit or a short to ground in the return circuit exists.

The possible causes are listed:

  • The return circuit of the solenoid is shorted to ground.

  • The energize circuit of the solenoid is open.

  • The return circuit of the solenoid is open.

  • The solenoid has failed.

  • The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.

Before performing this procedure, inspect the harness connectors that are involved in the circuit. Poor connections can often be the cause of a problem in an electrical circuit. Verify that all connections in the circuit are clean, secure and in good condition. If a problem with a connection is found, correct the problem and verify that this diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure.

System Response:

The machine response is listed:

  • A level 1 warning will be generated. The Blade Angle Left will not work but all other implements are still enabled.

Note: The following procedure can create numerous related diagnostic codes. When all harnesses are reconnected, the related diagnostic codes will be shown as being not active. Clear all related diagnostic codes after this procedure is completed.

Note: Ensure that CID 1933 FMI 04 for the solenoid is active.

Test Step 1. CHECK THE RETURN CIRCUIT OF THE SOLENOID FOR A SHORT TO GROUND.

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the OFF position.

  1. Disconnect the solenoid from the machine harness.

  1. Disconnect the machine harness at the ECM.

  1. At the ECM end of the solenoid harness connector, measure the resistance from the signal contact 6 (wire K952-BR) to all contacts that are used in the machine harness connectors for the ECM.

Expected Result:

Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms.

Results:

  • YES - Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to Test Step 2.

  • NO - Each resistance measurement is NOT greater than 5000 ohms. There is a short in the machine harness between signal contact 5 (wire K952-BR) and the circuit with the low resistance measurement.

Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    STOP

Test Step 2. CHECK THE HARNESS FOR AN OPEN.

  1. The the key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.

  1. The machine harness remains disconnected from the ECM.

  1. Install a jumper wire between pin 1 and 2 of the machine harness connector for the solenoid.

  1. At the machine harness connector, measure the resistance from signal contact 6 (wire 751-GN) to return contact 1 (wire K952-BR).

Expected Result:

The resistance should be less than 5.0 ohms.

Results:

  • OK - The resistance is less than 5.0 ohms. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to Test Step 3.

  • NOT OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The resistance measurement is not correct. There is an open circuit in the machine harness.

Repair: The open is in the wire with the resistance measuring greater than 5000 ohms. The resistance measurement is not correct. There is an open circuit in the machine harness. The open is in either signal wire (751-GN) or return wire (K952-BR) of the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    STOP

Test Step 3. CHECK THE SOLENOID.

  1. Reconnect the machine harness to the ECM.

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position. DO NOT start the engine.

  1. Observe the status of the diagnostic code.

Expected Result:

The diagnostic code is active. Then, the diagnostic code is NOT active as the jumper wire is installed and removed.

Results:

  • YES - The circuit is correct. The solenoid has failed.

Repair: Repeat this test "CHECK THE SOLENOID" in order to verify that the solenoid has failed. Replace the solenoid. See the Testing and Adjusting, "Calibration" procedure in the service manual for your machine.

    STOP

  • NO - The diagnostic code remains active. Proceed to test step 4.

Test Step 4. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE

  1. Inspect the harness connectors. Clean the contacts for the harness connectors. Check all wires for damage from chafing, corrosion, or excessive heat.

  1. Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires that are associated with the sensor circuit.

  1. Reconnect all harness connectors. Make sure that the connectors are fully seated and the clips for each connector are completely fastened.

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. Operate the machine.

  1. Check the status of the CID 1933 FMI 04 diagnostic code.

Expected Result:

The CID 1933 FMI 04 diagnostic code is active.

Results:

  • YES - The CID 1933 FMI 04 diagnostic code is active. The diagnostic code has not been corrected.

Repair: Check the circuit again. If the cause of the problem is not found, contact the Technical Communicator for your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If the ECM requires replacement, see Troubleshooting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".

    STOP

  • NO - The CID 1933 FMI 04 diagnostic code is not active. The diagnostic code does not exist at this time.

Repair: The initial diagnostic code was probably caused by a poor electrical connection at one of the harness connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation.

    STOP
