Tire selection, tire inflation pressures, and tire maintenance can be some of the most important factors in earthmoving equipment economics. Unless proper practices are observed, costly premature tire failures and lower power train failures may occur.
In order to achieve optimum tire service life, Caterpillar recommends that tire selection, tire inflation pressure, and tire maintenance decisions should be made together by the machine owners and the tire supplier.
In order to achieve optimum tire life and lower power train component life, care must be taken so that the tires on a machine are kept within the limits for size difference.
Differences in tire size on the same machine cause tire wear and increased stress to the drive shafts, differentials, and final drives. The front and rear drive shafts always turn at the same speed. Regardless of the positioning of the tires, the differences in tire size can result in tire scuffing and excessive stress to the lower power train components.
Maintaining an acceptable difference in tire size is especially critical on any machines that travel in third gear or higher speeds. This requirement includes any machines in load and carry applications, machines that travel between work sites, and machines that may travel between the service shop and the quarry pit. The distance that is traveled is not the concern. Speed is the concern. The combination of high stress during high speed reduces the oil film thickness that serves as protection for gears and bearings.
Inadequate lubrication can cause the planetary sleeve bearings in the final drive to seize to the planetary shafts or planetary gears. Inadequate lubrication can also cause scoring on the differential bevel gear and steel roller bearings.
Always discuss any tire changes with your tire supplier. Always take measurements on any changes that affect the tire radius. Measurements should be taken if there are any changes to the application, the payload, overall machine weight, the use of chains, and the use of different tires. For example, replacing only one or two tires with new tires may exceed the acceptable differences in tire size. This change is the case even if all of the tires are the same make and size. Using the same make and size of tires with tires that have different ply ratings may also exceed the recommendations for tire size. The use of bias ply tires and radial tires on the same machine may exceed the size recommendations even if the use is approved by the tire supplier.
Always check tire measurements when you are using retread tires. Check the tire measurements while the chains are installed on the tires. These recommendations also apply to tires with ballast, foam filled tires, and solid rubber tires.
New Recommendations
The tire size difference from side to side on the same axle should not exceed 3%.
The difference between the largest tire on the machine and the smallest tire on the opposite axle should not exceed 4%.
Recommended Procedure
- Ensure that all tires are inflated to the proper working pressure.
- Take measurements with a loaded bucket if the machine is working in a load and carry application. For other applications, take measurements with an empty bucket.
- Move the machine to a surface that is smooth, hard, and level. Move the machine to an area that is away from operating machines and away from personnel.
- Place a long measuring tape on the ground in a straight line. The measuring tape should be extended from the center of any tire.
- Slowly move the machine until the tire is on the measuring tape.
- Place the bucket in the load and carry position at approximately
0.6 m (2 ft) above the ground. - Place the transmission in the NEUTRAL position and engage the parking brake. Shut off the engine. Place blocks under the tires.
Note: Only one or two other people should be in the work area and both people should remain within the view of the machine operator.
- Wrap the measuring tape around the tire. Record the tire circumference measurement and the tire location. Use LF for the left front, RF for the right front, LR for the left rear, and RR for the right rear.
- Repeat Steps 4 through 8 for every tire.
Calculation Procedure
- In order to calculate the difference between two tires on the same axle, divide the largest tire circumference by the smallest tire circumference and subtract 1. The result should be 0.03 (3%) or less. If the result is greater than 3%, tire inflation pressures or tire changes are necessary.
- Repeat the calculation in Step 1 for the opposite axle tires.
- In order to calculate the difference between the largest tire on the machine and the smallest tire on the opposite axle, divide the largest tire circumference by the smallest tire circumference and subtract 1. The result should be 0.04 (4%) or less. If the result is greater than 4%, tire inflation pressures or tire changes are necessary.
Note: Discuss any changes in tire inflation pressure with the tire supplier. Check and maintain tire inflation pressures daily.
