Piston Pump (Constant Horsepower Flow Control) - Test and Adjust

Usage:

511 511

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from contact with hot hydraulic oil and from contact with hydraulic oil that is under high pressure.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. The hydraulic oil pressure must be released before any service on the hydraulic system is performed or serious personal injury could occur.

Verify that all of the work tools have been completely lowered to the ground. Release the hydraulic oil pressure at the hydraulic tank through the breaker relief valve when the breaker relief valve is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Verify that the hydraulic oil is cool before you begin to remove any hydraulic components or hydraulic lines.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

To prevent personal injury or equipment damage from failure of the hydraulic test equipment or associated circuit components because of blocked pump flow, make sure that the test equipment valves are fully open before starting the engine.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

To prevent personal injury and/or equipment damage from failed lines or components while the hydraulic test equipment is returned to the open flow position, slowly open the hydraulic test equipment valve while monitoring the pump flow.

If pump flow does not increase as the valve is opened, shut the engine off and determine what is preventing the pump from upstroking.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Before you perform the test perform the following tests.

  • Cylinder Cutout Test

  • Pump Flow Test

ReferenceRefer to the Troubleshooting Manual, RENR9345, "Electronic Service Tool" for the required service tools for the use of Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) on a C9 engine.

ReferenceRefer to the Testing and Adjusting, "Pump Flow - Test".

Note: The engine, the fuel, or the working altitude may be the problem if the operational checks indicate that slow speed of an implement is common to both pump circuits.

The pump hydraulic horsepower setting does not increase the engine horsepower or the pump hydraulic horsepower setting does not decrease the engine horsepower. The pump hydraulic horsepower setting is used to maximize the pump flow and pressure to the horsepower that is available. This will prevent the engine from lugging and premature engine failure. Adjust to the specifications only.

Note: If the hydraulic horsepower setting of the pumps exceed the specifications, the flow is reduced sooner from the pumps. The engine will not develop full horsepower. The machine will be lacking power.

  1. Move the machine to a smooth level surface. The machine should be moved away from other operating machines and away from personnel.

  1. Turn off the saw.

  1. Warm the hydraulic oil to normal operating temperature. Normal operating temperature is 40° C (104° F) to 60° C (140° F).

  1. Rotate knob (2) in order to highlight "Engine Speed and Hyd Pressure". Press the center of knob (2A) in order to proceed to the next screen and view pressure values.

ReferenceRefer to the Systems Operation and Troubleshooting, RENR8950, "IQAN MDL Control and Monitoring System".

  1. Move the engine speed dial to high idle.

  1. Raise the boom to full cylinder extension.

  1. Simultaneously move the following functions.

    • Boom Up (stalled)

    • Left Swing

    • Full left travel in rabbit mode

  1. Hold the three function for 3 seconds.

  1. Record the minimum speed of the engine. Also, verify that the travel pressure was above 100 Bar on a average during the test.

Note: If the travel pressure was not 100 Bar, repeat the test in softer soil conditions in order to apply more load on the tracks.

  1. Repeat the test three times. On machines with the power shift, engine speed should drop to 1725 ± 25 rpm. Engine speed will quickly recover to 1850 ± 25 rpm.

    Remove the caps.

  1. If the speed is incorrect, turn in horsepower adjustment screws (1) clockwise in order to decrease the speed. Turn in horsepower adjustment screws (1) counterclockwise in order to increase the speed.

  1. On machines with the power shift, engine speed should drop to 1725 ± 25 rpm. Engine speed will quickly recover to 1850 ± 25 rpm.
