(1) Use 6C-7887 Leg on the two gears that are removed in Step 16.

Start By:

  1. Drain the oil from the final drive.

  2. Remove the final drive. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive - Remove" in this manual.

  1. Remove bolts (2) that mount travel motor (1).

  2. Attach a suitable lifting device to the travel motor. Remove the travel motor. The weight of the travel motor is approximately 54 kg (120 lb).

  3. Remove O-ring seal (3) from the travel motor.

  4. Remove plug (4).

  5. Fasten lifting straps and a hoist to the final drive sprocket. Remove the sprocket bolts (5) from final drive sprocket (6). Use a soft faced hammer to unseat the sprocket.

  6. Remove final drive sprocket (6). The weight of the final drive sprocket is 91 kg (200 lb).

  7. Remove bolts (7) and the washers that hold cover (8) in place.

  8. Use forcing screws M12X50 mm (9) to elevate the cover. This action will allow enough clearance for your fingers to lift the cover off the final drive.

  9. Remove cover (8).

  10. If necessary, remove the spacer (Not Shown) from cover (8).

  11. Remove carrier assembly (10).

  12. Disassemble carrier assembly (10), as follows:

    1. Use Tooling (B) to remove retaining ring (11).

    2. Use a soft faced hammer to remove planetary gear assembly (12). Tooling (E) may also be used to remove planetary gear assembly (12).

      Note: Rotate the planetary gear assembly so that the gear assembly comes off perpendicular to the carrier shaft.

    3. Disassemble planetary gear assembly (12), as follows.

    4. Use Tooling (C) to remove the second retaining ring (13).

      Note: When you remove the bearing assembly, the rollers will fall out of the bearing race. Put a rubber band around the bearing rollers as you remove the bearing assembly.

    5. Remove two rings (14), and bearing (15) from planetary gear assembly (12).

    6. Repeat Steps 12a through 12e for the other two planetary gears.

    7. Remove the center shaft (16) from carrier assembly (10).

    8. Use a hammer and a punch to remove washer (16a) from shaft (16).

    9. Use Tooling (D) to remove retaining ring (17).

    10. Remove sun gear (18) from carrier assembly (10).

  13. Remove carrier assembly (19).

  14. Disassemble carrier assembly (19), as follows:

    1. Use Tooling (D) to remove retaining ring (20).

    2. Use Tooling (E) to remove planetary gear assembly (21).

    3. Use Tooling (F) and a press to drive the bearing assembly out of planetary gear (21).

      Note: This is only one method for removing the bearing. You may also cut the bearing. Cut a notch in the bearing cup. Refer to illustration 22. Remove one row of the bearing rollers through the notch. Make sure that you catch the rollers, while you drive the bearing assembly out of planetary gear (21).

    4. Repeat Steps 14a through 14c for the other two planetary gear assemblies.

    5. Use Tooling (D) to remove retaining ring (22).

    6. Remove sun gear (23) from carrier assembly (19).

  15. Use Tooling (D) to remove two retaining rings (26) from two of the planetary gear assemblies (24) from carrier assembly (25).

    Note: There are two sets of bearing rollers for each planetary gear assembly. The bearing rollers for the lower bearing assembly will fall after the planetary gear assembly is removed.

  16. Use Tooling (E) to remove two planetary gear assemblies (24).

    Note: Two planetary gear assemblies (24) are removed to access the retaining ring that holds the carrier assembly (25) to the motor housing.

  17. Use Tooling (G) to remove retaining ring (27).

  18. Use Tooling (H) and a hoist to remove carrier assembly (25).

  19. Disassemble carrier assembly (25), as follows:

    1. Use Tooling (E) to remove bearing race (28) from the two shafts of carrier assembly (25).

    2. Use Tooling (D) to remove three retaining rings (26) from the three remaining planetary gear assemblies.

    3. Use Tooling (E) to remove planetary gear assemblies from the carrier assembly.

    4. Use Tooling (E) to remove the other three bearing races from the carrier assembly.

    5. Disassemble planetary gear assemblies (24), as follows.

    6. Remove bearing rollers (29), two bearing races (28), two rings (30), and retaining ring (32) from planetary gear (31).

      Note: Place a rubber band around the bearing rollers as you remove the bearings.

  20. Fasten a hoist to the final drive, and turn the final drive over 180 degrees.

    ------ WARNING! ------

    Sudden release of spring force can cause injury.

    To prevent the possibility of injury, follow the procedure to relieve the spring pressure.


  21. Tighten Tooling (I) to relieve the spring pressure.

  22. Use Tooling (J) to remove retaining ring (33).

  23. Remove Tooling (I).

    Note: There is an inner spring and an outer spring in each spring set.

  27. Apply air pressure through the port of plug (32). Hold a finger over the port directly across plug (32) while you inject the air. This will unseat the brake piston (37).

  28. Remove brake piston (37).

  29. Remove two backup rings (38) and O-ring seal (39) from the piston.

  30. Fasten a hoist to the final drive, and turn the final drive over 180 degrees in order for the discs and plates to fall out of the motor housing.

  31. Remove discs and plates (40) from the motor housing.

    Note: Note the orientation of the discs and the plates for installation purposes.

  32. Use Tooling (K) to remove washer (41).

  33. Use Tooling (J) to remove retaining ring (42).

    Note: Tap on plate (43) to relieve the pressure that is on retaining ring (42).

  34. Fasten a hoist to the final drive, and turn the final drive over 180 degrees, as shown.

  35. Use Tooling (I) to remove coupling shaft (45), bearing (44), and plate (43).

  36. Disassemble coupling shaft (45), bearing (44), and plate (43), as follows.

    1. Use Tooling (F) and a press to push the coupling shaft (45) through bearing (44) and plate (43).

      Note: Bearing (44) will stop once the bearing makes contact with the plates (X).

      Note: Spread plates (X) wide enough so that bearing (44) can be removed from plate (43).

    2. Use Tooling (F) and a press to push bearing (44) out of plate (43).

    Note: Use caution not to damage the cage of the bearing cone underneath nut (46).

    Note: Use caution not to damage the threads on the spindle.

  37. Drill four holes at Dimension (X). Holes at Dimension (X) should be 5 to 10 mm (0.20 to 0.39 inch) in diameter.

  38. Use a suitable chisel to split nut (46) into two pieces at Dimension (X).

  39. Remove nut (46) and all remaining contaminants.

  40. Remove dowels (47).

127-8458 Final Drive Disassembly and Assembly Bench

Note: The following procedure is for using the final drive disassembly and assembly 127-8458 Bench .

Reference: Refer to the Tool Operating Manual, NEHS0673 for further procedures concerning 127-8458 Bench.

  1. Fasten Tooling (L) and a hoist to Tooling (M).

  2. Lower Tooling (M) into the final drive. Make sure that the notches in nut (46) are aligned with the keys on Tooling (M). The approximate weight of Tooling (M) is 45 kg (100 lb).

  3. Fasten Tooling (N) and a hoist to the final drive. Keep the hoist attached.

  4. Position a fork lift under adapter ring (48).

  5. Raise the final drive and adapter ring (48) simultaneously.

  6. Raise the final drive and adapter ring (48) into the air so that you can bolt the final drive and adapter ring (48) together with five bolts (49).

    Note: Place blocks under the adapter ring (48) while you tighten bolts (49).

  7. Remove the hoist from Tooling (N) and attach four chains and a hoist to the upper half of Tooling (P).

  8. Remove the upper half of Tooling (P). The weight of the upper half is 816 kg (1800 lb).

  9. Install Tooling (N) and place adapter ring (48) and the final drive onto the lower half of Tooling (P). The weight of the final drive, adapter ring (48), and Tooling (M) is 522 kg (1150 lb).

  10. Fasten the final drive onto the lower half of Tooling (P). Use eight 1 - 8THDX3.5 inch bolts (50) and eight 1 - 8THD nuts with washers.

  11. Remove Tooling (N) and the hoist.

  12. Place Tooling (Q) into the final drive.

  13. Fasten a hoist to the upper half of Tooling (P) and install the upper half of Tooling (P) to the lower half of Tooling (P). Pin the two halves together.

  14. Attach Tooling (R) to the pressure reducing valve manifold, as shown.

  15. Set the torque level for the bench to 2000 psi (14500 lb ft). Do not exceed this pressure.

    Reference: Refer to the Tool Operating Manual, NEHS0673 for setting the torque level.

  16. Place hex shaft (51) through the bench and into Tooling (Q).

  17. Remove locknut (46). The breakaway torque will vary. The nut will loosen usually at 1400 psi (10750 lb ft).

  18. Fasten a hoist to the upper half of Tooling (P).

  19. Remove the upper half of Tooling (P).

Disassembly Procedure for the Main Housing and the Motor Housing

  1. Fasten Tooling (N) and a hoist to main housing (52), as shown.

  2. Separate the main housing (52) from the motor housing (53). The weight of the main housing is 204 kg (450 lb).

    Note: Two outer races and one roller bearing will be removed with the main housing. The other roller bearing and the two Duo-cone seal kits will remain with the motor housing.

  3. Disassemble motor housing (53), as follows.

    1. Use two screwdrivers and remove bearing (54) from the motor housing.

    2. Remove the Duo-cone seal kit (55) from the motor housing.

    3. Remove the two backup rings and O-ring seal (56) from the motor housing.

    4. Remove the other Duo-cone seal kit (57) from the motor housing.

  4. Disassemble the main housing (52), as follows.

    1. Remove bearing (58) from the main housing (52).

    2. Turn main housing (52) over 180 degrees, as shown.

    3. Remove bolts (59).

    4. Install Tooling (A) and a hoist to housing (61).

    5. Separate housing (61) from ring gear (60).

    6. Remove race (62) with a brass punch and a hammer.

    7. Rotate housing (61) over 180 degrees.
