Tilt Cylinder - Remove

Usage:

Removal Procedure

Start By:

a. Install the steering frame lock pin. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock Pin - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.

b. Release the pressure from the hydraulic system. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being serviced.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

--------WARNING!------

NOTE: Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, all hoses and all tubes. This will help prevent fluid loss and this will help to prevent contaminants from entering the system.

1. Remove the two bolts and the washers that hold cover (1) to the loader frame. Remove the cover.

2. Disconnect lubrication hose assembly (2) (if equipped) from the head end of the tilt cylinder.

3. Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting sling to tilt cylinder guard (3). Remove the four bolts and the washers that hold tilt cylinder guard (3) to the tilt cylinder. Remove the guard. The weight of the tilt cylinder guard is 30 kg (66 lb).

4. Disconnect lubrication hose assembly (4) (if equipped) from the rod end of the tilt cylinder.

5. Remove bolt (5), the nut and the washers from the rod end of the tilt cylinder.

6. Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting sling to tilt cylinder (6), as shown. Use Tooling (A) to remove collets (7) from each side of the tilt cylinder pin.

7. Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting sling to tilt cylinder pin (8). Remove the pin and the shim(s) (if equipped). The weight of the tilt cylinder pin is 24 kg (52 lb).

8. Move tilt cylinder (6) to the position shown. Secure the tilt cylinder to the rear frame, as shown.

9. Attach a hoist and suitable lifting chains to bucket (9), as shown.

10. Start the engine.

11. While supporting bucket (9) with the hoist, raise the lift arm assembly until the bucket control group safety pins (10) can be installed. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Bucket Control Group Safety Pins - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced. Lower the hoist and bucket until the bucket causes the tilt lever to contact the lift arm stop. The weight of the bucket is 3955 kg (8720 lb).

12. Stop the engine. Rrelease the pressure from the hydraulic system. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being serviced.

13. Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting sling to tilt cylinder (6). Move the tilt cylinder to the position shown.

14. Disconnect hose assemblies (11) and (12) from the tilt cylinder.

15. Remove two bolts (13) and the washers that hold tube assembly (14) to the lower tube assembly.

16. Remove four bolts (15) and the washers from tube assembly (14). Move tube assembly (14) to the side of the lift cylinder.

17. Repeat Steps (15) and (16) for the other lift cylinder.

18. Remove bolt (16), the nut and the washers from the head end pin assembly of the tilt cylinder.

19. Use Tooling (A) to remove collets (17) from each side of the tilt cylinder pin.

20. Attach a hoist and suitable lifting sling to tilt cylinder pin (18). Remove the pin and the shim(s) (if equipped) from the tilt cylinder. The weight of the tilt cylinder pin is 24 kg (53 lb).

21. Remove the tilt cylinder. The weight of the tilt cylinder is 430 kg (948 lb).
