(1) Torque for six bolts ... 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 11 lb ft)

(2, 9) Use shims to get the following end play. ... 0.10 ± 0.05 mm (0.004 ± 0.002 inch)

Note: See "Procedure to Adjust the Lower Transfer Gear Bearings" .

(3) Torque for six bolts ... 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 11 lb ft)

(4) Torque for 12 bolts ... 270 ± 25 N·m (200 ± 18 lb ft)

Note: Torque for four bolts that hold the transmission mounting brackets is 270 ± 25 N·m (200 ± 18 lb ft) .

(5) Torque for one bolt ... 270 ± 25 N·m (200 ± 18 lb ft)

(6) Torque for six bolts ... 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 11 lb ft)

(7) Before installing the lip seal, coat the seal bore surface in the retainer with gasket material and allow the seal dry. Do NOT apply gasket material to the lip seal case.

(8) Torque for six bolts ... 55 ± 7 N·m (41 ± 5 lb ft)

(10) Put 5P-3931 Anti-Seize Compound on the threads and tighten the nut to the following torque. ... 612 ± 68 N·m (451 ± 50 lb ft)

(11) Torque for six bolts ... 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 11 lb ft)

(12) Use shims to adjust the backlash between the pinion and the bevel gear to the following specification. ... 0.30 + 0.12 - 0.10 mm (0.012 + 0.005 - 0.004 inch)

Note: See "Procedure to Adjust the End Play of Bevel Pinion Bearing" .

Note: Use an appropriate sized bolt (A) in the case. Tighten the bolt until there is no end play in the pinion. Position the bevel and transfer gear group with the bevel gear shaft in the vertical position while the bevel gear is at the bottom. Add shims (12) in order to reduce the backlash or remove the shims in order to increase the backlash.

NOTICE

To avoid machine damage, make sure bolt (A) that holds the pinion in place is removed when adjustments are completed.

(13) Torque for 12 bolts ... 475 ± 50 N·m (350 ± 37 lb ft)

Procedure to Adjust Lower Transfer Gear Bearings

  1. Use a 0.038 mm (0.0015 inch) shim stock or use a standard feeler gauge in order to ensure that the bearings are seated correctly.

  1. Assemble the input transfer gear group in a vertical position in the case. Install the bearing cage without shims (2) .

  1. Install two bolts and two washers directly across from each other.

  1. Torque the bolts to 2.25 N·m (20.0 lb in) .

  1. Rotate the input gear by three full turns.

  1. Torque the bolts to 4.5 N·m (40 lb in) and repeat Step 6. Torque the bolts again to 4.5 N·m (40 lb in) .

  1. Measure the space between the case and the outside diameter of the bearing cage flange that is next to each bolt.

  1. Add the dimension that is found in Step 7 and divide this measurement by two.

  1. Add 0.23 mm (0.009 inch) to the dimension that is found in Step 8 .

Note: If the bearing adjustment that is determined in Step 9 is questionable, repeat Step 2 through Step 9. If the repeated measurement is within 0.05 mm (0.002 inch) of the original thickness, use the smaller measurement.

  1. Add enough shims in order to equal the dimension that is found in Step 9 .

  1. Install the bearing cage, the shims, the bolts, and the washers. Torque the bolts to 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 11 lb ft). Check the end play with a dial indicator.

Procedure to Adjust the End Play of the Bevel Pinion Bearing

  1. Use a 0.038 mm (0.0015 inch) shim stock or use a standard feeler gauge in order to ensure that the bearings are seated correctly.

  1. With the pinion in the vertical position, install the cage in the case without shims (12) .

  1. Install two bolts and two washers across from each other.

  1. Torque the bolts to 4.5 N·m (40 lb in) .

  1. Rotate the pinion by three full turns.

  1. Torque the bolts to 9.0 N·m (80 lb in) .

  1. Rotate the pinion by three full turns. Torque the bolts again to 9.0 N·m (80 lb in) .

  1. Measure the gap between the case and the outside diameter of the bearing cage flange next to each bolt.

  1. Add the measurements that are found in Step 8 and divide the total by two.

  1. Add 0.43 mm (0.017 inch) to the dimension that is found in Step 9 .

  1. Install the bolts and the washers. Torque the bolts to 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 11 lb ft). Check the end play with a dial indicator.
