NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Remove the drain valve plug in the transmission tank. Install a 100 mm (4.0 inch) long NPT pipe nipple in order to open the drain valve. The outer diameter of the NPT pipe nipple should be 25 mm (1.0 inch). Drain the oil into a suitable container.

Note: Hand tighten the NPT pipe nipple. Do not use tools.

  1. Clean the drain plug. Remove the pipe nipple and install the drain plug.

  1. Remove the bolts from the cover on the front of the transmission tank. Remove the cover.

  1. Clean the debris from the bottom of the tank.

  1. Remove the suction line.

  1. Remove the suction screen from the transmission tank.

  1. Wash the suction screen in clean, nonflammable solvent.

  1. Install the clean suction screen, the hose, the clean flange and the clean retaining bolts.

  1. Clean the cover for the front of the transmission tank in clean, nonflammable solvent. Inspect the cover gasket. If the gasket is damaged, replace the gasket.

  1. Install the cover to the front of the transmission tank.

  1. Fill the transmission tank. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities". Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" .

  1. Repeat Step 12 and Step 13 until the oil stabilizes in the FULL COLD mark in the sight gauge.

  1. Lower the guard on the engine shutdown switch. Start the engine and operate the engine at low idle. Check for leaks and make necessary repairs.

  1. Clean the filler cap and install the filler cap.

NOTICE

Failure to properly fill the transmission tank after an oil change may cause damage to the transmission clutches. Follow the procedure that is described above.

The transmission direction and speed control MUST be left in NEUTRAL until the system is full.
