    ------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a released spring force.

Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.

Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to release the spring force.

Note: The springs are compressed by pump head (31). The spring tension must be released before socket head bolts (32) and (33) are removed from pump head (31). Slowly release the spring tension. Be certain that the head moves away from the case as socket head bolts (32) and (33) are loosened. Socket head bolts (32) and (33) are long enough to release the spring force before the bolts are removed.

    NOTICE

Failure to follow the recommended procedure or the specified tooling that is required for the procedure could result in damage to components.

To avoid component damage, follow the recommended procedure using the recommended tools.

Note: To dislodge pump head (31) from steering pump housing (3), tap on the side of pump head (31) with a rubber hammer. Slowly remove the pump head from steering pump housing (3). Tooling (E) will act as a guide in this procedure. During the removal of pump head (31), the valve plate may stick to the rotary pump group or to the pump head. Be careful not to damage the valve plate or pump head (31) during this procedure. When pump head (31) moves away, do not allow the pump head to move against steering pump housing (3). This could cause damage to the valve plate.

  1. Position the steering pump, as shown. Loosen six socket head bolts (32) and (33).

  2. Remove two socket head bolts (32). Install Tool (E) in steering pump housing (3).

  3. Remove four socket head bolts (33) from steering pump housing (3).

  4. Remove pump head (31) from steering pump housing (3). Remove Tool (E) from steering pump housing (3).

  5. Remove gasket (34) from pump head (31).

  6. Remove piston (35) from rod (38). Remove bias piston (37) and bias spring (36) from rod (39).

  7. Remove valve plate (40) from pump head (31).

  9. Remove roller bearing cup (47) from pump head (31).

  10. If necessary, remove rod (38), O-ring seal (45), rod (39), and O-ring seal (46) from pump head (31). Inspect rod (38) and rod (39) for wear or damage. If necessary, replace rod (38) and rod (39).

    ------ WARNING! ------

Do not remove the retaining ring until the spring force has been released. Failure to do so could result in personal injury or death. In order to prevent this, use a suitable press to hold the spring force while the retaining ring is removed. Slowly release the spring tension with the press after the retaining ring has been removed.

  13. Put barrel (51) in position on a suitable press, as shown. Use Tool (A) and a suitable press to maintain pressure. Remove retaining ring (52) from barrel (51). Slowly release the pressure on the press in order to remove spring (54) from the barrel.

  14. Remove guide (55), spring (54), and guide (53) from barrel (51).

Note: Guides (53) and (55) are different sizes. The guides should be identified for assembly purposes. The guide with the smaller diameter goes in barrel (51) first. The guide with the larger diameter fits below snap ring (52).
