Procedure for Bearing Installation

Note: It is important to follow the following procedure closely.

1. Install cups (1), (3), and (5) into the respective bores. Ensure that all of the bearings on each shaft are completely seated by repeating the press/roll process until the movement is eliminated.

2. Measure the depth from the surface of the housing to the surface of the cup. Subtract the depth of the pilot on covers (2), (4), and (6) from the previous measurement.

3. Repeat this process for all three bearing locations.

4. Subtract 0.18 mm (0.007 inch) from the shims of the input shaft in order to allow a bearing clearance of 0.18 ± 0.03 mm (0.007 ± 0.001 inch).

5. Subtract 0.08 mm (0.003 inch) from the shims of the intermediate shaft in order to allow a bearing clearance of 0.08 ± 0.03 mm (0.003 ± 0.001 inch).

6. Subtract 0.08 mm (0.003 inch) from the shims of the output shaft in order to allow a bearing clearance of 0.08 ± 0.03 mm (0.003 ± 0.001 inch).

A dial indicator may also be used in order to determine the bearing end play by using the tapped holes in the end of the input shaft and the intermediate shafts.

Note: In order to get a correct reading, the bearings must be seated by rolling the bearings in place.
