Various hopper inserts are available for use with mobile transfer vehicles. The commercially built inserts vary in capacity from 12 to 15 tons. A hopper insert that is empty can weigh 5500 lb. Increased component wear can be associated with all types of machines that contain a hopper insert.
Machines that have rubber tires may develop increased component wear in the following areas:
- Front wheel assist motors
- Frames for the bogie
- Ball joints
- Front bogie wheels
- Steering linkage
- Front axle shafts and Axle bearings
Track-type machines may see increased wear on the following components.
- Undercarriage
- Steel rails
- Track pads
- Backing plates for track pads
- Bogie wheels
- Axle shafts and Axle bearings
Mobile track machines may see increased wear on the following items.
- Bogie frame bushings and Bogie shaft
- Bogie wheels and Bearings
- Belt life
- Pad wear
- Wear on idlers
Consideration of warranties on components that have premature failure due to the use of a hopper insert may be pro-rated. Damage to the undercarriage that was caused by a hopper insert will not be covered under the warranty.
You must use the following instructions when you operate the machine.
- The paver should never be in travel mode when the hopper insert is more than half full of asphalt.
- Do not operate any paver above 3 miles per hour when the hopper insert is full of asphalt.
- In order to prevent damage to the engine compartment, special care must be taken while you transfer asphalt to the hopper insert.
- Do not drive pavers that have hopper inserts over curbs, ditches, or rough terrain. The obstacles will affect the stability of the machine.
- Asphalt pavers should never operate with more than 8 to 10 tons in the hopper insert.
- Adding hopper inserts is a semi-permanent modification in which case the machine hoppers stay DOWN all the time. This makes it harder to access greasing points on some machines. Failure to grease, or increasing the interval that components get greased will result in rapid wear of undercarriage components.
