The transmission system must be calibrated if any of the following conditions have occurred:
- A transmission solenoid valve has been replaced or cleaned.
- A different power train ECM has been installed.
- New flash software has been flashed into the ECM.
- A transmission clutch has been rebuilt.
- The transmission clutch does not shift correctly.

Error Codes for the Calibration of the Transmission Clutch     | |
E01     | The Clutch Solenoid or the Speed Sensor has an Active Fault.     |
E02     | The Clutch Pedal was not released when you entered the Submode.     |
E03     | Active Fault For the Position sensor (Clutch Pedal)     |
E04     | The Transmission Lever is Not in the PARK Position.     |
E05     | Temperature of the Transmission Oil is Below the Fault Threshold. (60 °C (140 °F))     |
E06     | The Engine Speed is Below the Fault Threshold of 2000 rpm.     |
E09     | Machine Speed Is Not Zero.     |
During calibration of the transmission clutch pressure, error codes (EXX) can occur. The error codes will appear in the display area of the Caterpillar Monitoring System. The error codes will appear if a problem occurs during the calibration.
Procedure
Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement. Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine. Prevent possible injury by performing the procedure that follows before working on the machine. |
Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil. Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system. Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
Note: If you install a new transmission solenoid valve, shift the transmission into a gear that uses the solenoid valve. Shift the transmission at least twelve times. Allow sufficient time for the corresponding clutch to become fully pressurized. Refer to table 3 for information on the solenoids.
- Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.
- Turn on the engine and warm the transmission oil to at least 65 °C (149 °F). The Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) can be used to monitor the temperature of the oil.
- Install the correct hose assembly from 1U-5482 Pressure Adapter Group on the pressure tap of the modulating valve for the transmission clutch. Installation is on the clutch that is being calibrated. Attach the opposite end of the hose assembly to the 0 to 3400 kPa (0 to 580 psi) pressure gauge in the 1U-5481 Pressure Gauge Group .

- Use the 4C-8195 Control Service Tool to enter Transmission Calibration Mode "7". Then enter the submode that corresponds to the clutch that is being calibrated. Enter the submode by using the "SCROLL" switch.

- The Caterpillar Monitoring System will display the correct pressure for each clutch, when the conditions are correct. The units of the value that is displayed is shown in one-tenth of kPa. Multiply the value that is shown in the display by 10 to determine the true specified value in kPa. Record the value.
Note: The Caterpillar Monitoring System will not display the correct pressure for each clutch, when the conditions are not correct. Instead, an error code (EXX) appears. The calibration will not run until all necessary conditions are met. Correct the error code and perform these procedures again. Refer to table 2 for a list of the error codes and the meaning of the error codes.
- When all conditions are met and the pressure is shown in the display area, press the clutch pedal to the full DOWN position.
- The value that is shown in the display area will change and a number that corresponds to the electrical current of the particular transmission solenoid valve is shown. The INCREMENT (+) and DECREMENT (-) positions of the "CLEAR" switch can now be used to adjust the electrical current of the transmission solenoid valve. The electrical current of the transmission solenoid valve controls the transmission clutch pressure.
- Release the clutch pedal.
- To exit this submode, use the "SCROLL" switch to scroll to the submode that corresponds to the next clutch that needs to be calibrated, or scroll to submode 40. Refer to Table 5 for a list of the submodes for calibration of the transmission clutch engagement. Submode 40 is used in order to calibrate the transmission clutch fill. Exit the Transmission Calibration Mode by using the "MODE" switch.
ReferenceFor more information on submode 40, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Fill Time for the Transmission Clutch - Calibrate" for the machine that is being tested.
