Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- Install ring (11) , ring (17) , O-ring seal (10) , O-ring seal (12) , seal (15) , and seal (16) onto cylinder head (13) . Use Illustration 1 to ensure that the rings, the O-ring seals, and the seals are oriented properly.

Improper assembly of parts that are spring loaded can cause bodily injury. To prevent possible injury, follow the established assembly procedure and wear protective equipment. |
- Apply Tooling (C) to Surface (X) of wiper seal (14) .
- Install wiper seal (14) onto cylinder head (13) . Use Illustration 1 to ensure that the wiper seal is oriented properly.
- Use hydraulic fluid to lubricate the sealing lips of seal (15) , seal (16) , and wiper seal (14) .
- Place the components of the stick cylinder in position on Tooling (A) .
- Hand tighten cylinder head (13) onto cylinder body (8) .
- Push cylinder rod (9) into cylinder head (13) .
- Remove cylinder head (13) and cylinder rod (9) from cylinder body (8) .
- Install seal (5) and ring (4) onto piston (6) .
- Lubricate the threads of nut (3) with Tooling (D) .
- Install nut (3) and piston (6) onto cylinder rod (9) . Tighten nut (3) to a torque of 3200 ± 200 N·m (2360 ± 150 lb ft).
- Install spring (7) , ring (2) , and plunger (1) into cylinder rod (9) .
- Lubricate the threads of cylinder head (13) with Tooling (D) .
- Install piston (6) , cylinder rod (9) , and cylinder head (13) into cylinder body (8) .
Note: Be sure that plunger (1) fits into the port at the other end of cylinder body (8) .
- Use Tooling (B) to tighten cylinder head (13) to a torque of 600 ± 130 N·m (440 ± 95 lb ft).
End By: Install the boom cylinder onto the machine. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Boom Cylinder - Install".
