Disassembly Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the winch. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Boom Winch - Remove" for the correct procedure.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

  1. Drain the oil from the winch.

    Note: The drive motor contains springs under pressure.

    Note: The drive motor weighs 23 kg (50 lb).

    ------ WARNING! ------

    Personal injury can result from parts and/or covers under spring pressure.

    Spring force will be released when covers are removed.

    Be prepared to hold spring loaded covers as the bolts are loosened.

  1. Remove twelve bolts (2). Remove drive motor (1) .

  1. Remove sixteen springs (3) .

  1. Remove bolts (4). Remove handle (5) .

  1. Remove brake hub (6) .

  1. Remove thrust washers (7) and thrust bearing (8) from shaft (9) .

    Note: Mark the position of the sprag clutches for assembly purposes.

  1. Remove retaining rings (10), retaining ring (11 ) and retaining ring (12). Remove two washers (13) and two plates (14). Remove sprag clutches (15) .

  1. Install Tooling (E). Use a suitable lifting device in order to remove piston (16) .

  1. Remove O-ring seal (17). Remove O-ring seal (18) .

  1. Remove seven divider plates (19). Remove six friction discs (20) .

  1. Remove spacer plate (21) .

  1. Remove twelve bolts (22) and the washers. Remove base (23) .

  1. Install Tooling (E). Use a suitable lifting device in order to support brake housing (24). Use two heel bars between cable drum (25) and the brake housing in order to remove the brake housing. The brake housing weighs 45 kg (100 lb).

  1. Remove shaft (26) from the brake housing.

  1. Remove seal (27) and bearing (28). Remove O-ring seal (29) .

  1. Remove sun gear (30) .

  1. Use Tool (A) in order to remove seal (31) .

  1. Remove retaining ring (32) from final drive housing (33) .

  1. Remove breather assembly (35) .

  1. Remove thrust ring (36) and plate (37). Remove O-ring seal (38) .

    Note: The planetary carrier weighs 23 kg (50 lb).

  1. Install Tooling (E). Use a suitable lifting device in order to remove planetary carrier (39) .

  1. Remove retaining rings (40) from pin (41) .

  1. Use Tool (D) and a suitable press in order to remove pin (41) from carrier (42). Remove thrust rings (43) and planetary gear (44) .

  1. Repeat Step 23 and Step 24 on the other two gear assemblies.

  1. Remove sun gear (45) .

  1. Remove retaining ring (46) .

  1. Use Tool (B) in order to remove retaining ring (47) .

  1. Use Tool (C) in order to remove retaining ring (48) .

    Note: The final drive housing weighs 27 kg (60 lb).

  1. Install Tooling (E). Use a suitable lifting device in order to support final drive housing (49). Use a pry bar between the cable drum and the final drive housing. Gently pry the final drive housing from the cable drum.

  1. Use Tool (A) in order to remove seal (50) .

  1. Use Tool (D) and a suitable press in order to remove bearing (51) .

  1. Use a suitable press in order to remove bearing (53), bearing (54) and planetary carrier assembly (52) .

  1. Remove planetary (55) from ring gear (56) .

  1. Use Tool (D) in order to remove plate (57) .

  1. Remove retaining ring (58) and pin (59). Remove gear (60) and thrust washers (61) .

  1. Repeat Step 36 on the other two gear assemblies.
