  1. Inspect all parts and clean all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

  2. Rotate the wheels in order to position axle housing (19) to the machine. Use floor jack (26) in order to position the shaft yoke on axle housing (19) in a level orientation.

  3. Use the hoist in order to lower the dump body enough to connect hydraulic hose (25) to brake line (24).

  4. Position rear axle housing (19) to mounting plate (17), mounting plate (21) and rear suspension frame (11). Attach Tooling (C) and two nylon lifting straps to the machine in order to hold axle housing (19) to the rear suspension frame.

  5. Use the hoist and lower the dump body enough in order to position mounting plate (17) and mounting plate (21) to rear axle housing (19). Use a pry bar and manipulate rear axle housing (19) in order to align the bolt holes in the mating components.

  6. Install four bolts (20) and the washers that secure axle housing (19) to mounting plate (21). Tighten bolts (20) to a torque of 270 ± 40 N·m (199 ± 30 lb ft).

  7. Position bracket (23) to axle housing (19). Install four bolts (22) and the washers that secure bracket (23) and axle housing (19) to rear suspension frame (11). Tighten bolts (22) to a torque of 900 ± 100 N·m (664 ± 74 lb ft).

  8. Install four bolts (16) and the washers that secure axle housing (19) to mounting plate (17). Tighten bolts (16) to a torque of 270 ± 40 N·m (199 ± 30 lb ft).

  9. Install four bolts (18) and the washers that secure axle housing (19) to rear suspension frame (19). Tighten bolts (18) to a torque of 900 ± 100 N·m (664 ± 74 lb ft). Remove the floor jack from the machine.

  10. Use the hoist in order to lower the machine to the ground. Remove Tooling (A), Tooling (B) and the hoist from dump body (15). Remove Tooling (C) from the machine.

  11. Install hose clamp (12) that secures hydraulic hose (13) to differential (14). Connect hydraulic hose (13) to differential (14).

  12. Connect hydraulic line (10) to the rear axle housing.

  13. Install four bolts (9) in order to install drive shaft universal joint (8) to drive shaft (1). Tighten bolts (9) to a torque of 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft).

  14. Install four bolts (7) in order to install drive shaft universal joint (6) to drive shaft (1). Tighten bolts (7) to a torque of 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft).

  15. Place an appropriate floor jack under the drive shaft. Use tie straps in order to secure the universal joint to the floor jack.

  16. Install four bolts (5) in order to connect drive shaft (1) to center axle (4). Tighten bolts (5) to a torque of 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft).

  17. Install four bolts (3) in order to connect drive shaft (1) to rear axle (2). Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft).

  18. Remove the floor jack from the drive shaft.

  19. Fill the axle housing with fluid to the proper level. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil - Change".

End By:

  1. Install the stabilizer rod for the rear axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR3447, "Rear Axle Stabilizer Rod - Remove and Install".

  2. Purge the air out of the braking system. Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, RENR3488, "Service Brake Air - Purge".
