Center Axle - Remove

Start By:

  1. Remove the center drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Center Drive Shaft - Romove and Install".

  2. Remove the rear axle housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rear Axle Housing - Remove".

  3. Remove the stabilizer rod for the center axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR3447, "Center Axle Stabilizer Rod - Remove and Install".

  4. Drain the oil from the center axle housing. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil - Change".

Personal injury or death can result from improper lifting or blocking.

When a hoist or jack is used to lift any part or component, stand clear of the area. Be sure the hoist or jack has the correct capacity to lift a component. Install blocks or stands before performance of any work under a heavy component.

Approximate weights of the components are shown. Clean all surfaces where parts are to be installed.

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Disconnect hydraulic brake hose (1) from the brake line that is on center axle housing (2).

  2. Disconnect breather hose (3) from center axle housing (2). Disconnect hydraulic hose (6) from the differential. Remove bolt (5), the washer and hose clamp (4) that secures hydraulic hose (6) to the differential.

  3. Position an appropriate floor jack under the shaft yoke that is on axle housing (2).

  4. Remove four bolts (9) and the washers that secure bracket (10) and axle housing (2) to the center suspension frame. Remove bracket (10) from the axle housing.

  5. Remove four bolts (7) and the washers that secure bracket (8) to axle housing (2).

  6. Remove four bolts (11) and the washers that secure bracket (12) to axle housing (2). Remove four bolts (13) and the washers that secure axle housing (2) to the center suspension frame.

  7. Attach Tooling (A) to each side of center suspension frame (14).

  8. Use Tooling (B) and (C) in order to raise dump body (15) off the center axle housing.

  9. Use the floor jack in order to lower the shaft yoke that is on axle housing (2).

  10. Rotate the wheels in order to remove axle housing (2) from the machine. Place Tooling (D) under dump body (15). Lower the dump body to Tooling (D). The hoist and Tooling (B) and (C) can be removed now.
