Schematic of the Modulating Valve for Speed 1 (Number 5)

This diagnostic code is for the Modulating Valve for Speed 1 (Number 5).

See Systems Operation, "Solenoid Valves" for help with the identification of the locations of the solenoids.

This diagnostic code is recorded when the current of the solenoid is below normal.

Note: Ensure that CID 0695FMI 05 for the solenoid is on hold and that the diagnostic code indicator shows "SERV CODE".

Test Step 1. CHECK THE SOLENOID AND THE INTERNAL HARNESS FOR THE TRANSMISSION.

  1. Turn the key start switch to the ON position. DO NOT START THE ENGINE. Ensure that CID 0695 FMI 05 is on hold and that the diagnostic code indicator shows "SERV CODE".

  2. At the transmission case, disconnect the machine harness from the internal harness for the transmission.

  3. At the machine harness connector that was disconnected from the transmission case, place a jumper from the solenoid signal contact to the return contact.

  4. Observe the status of the diagnostic code indicator.

Expected Result:

"SERV CODE" is displayed and "SERV CODE" is NOT displayed as the jumper is installed and the jumper is removed. The action alarm will sound when the diagnostic code indicator changes.

Results:

  • YES - "SERV CODE" is displayed and "SERV CODE" is NOT displayed as the jumper is installed and the jumper is removed. The circuit is correct. The solenoid or the internal harness for the transmission has failed. Proceed to Test Step 2.

  • NO - "SERV CODE" does not change as the jumper is installed and the jumper is removed. The diagnostic code remains. Proceed to Test Step 3.

Test Step 2. CHECK THE RESISTANCE OF THE SOLENOID.

  1. Disconnect the internal harness of the transmission from the solenoid that is suspected.

  2. At the solenoid, measure the resistance between the two contacts of the solenoid connector.

Expected Result:

The resistance should be less than 15 ohms.

Results:

  • OK - The resistance is less than 15 ohms.

Repair: The resistance for the solenoid is correct. The internal harness of the transmission has failed. Either the wire for solenoid signal or wire 975-WH(White) is open in the internal harness of the transmission. Repair the internal harness of the transmission or replace the internal harness for the transmission.

    STOP

  • NOT OK - The resistance is not less than 15 ohms.

Repair: The solenoid is failed. Replace the solenoid.

    STOP

Test Step 3. CHECK THE SOLENOID CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN.

  1. Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.

  2. Disconnect the machine harness connectors J1 and J2 from the ECM.

  3. The jumper that was installed in a previous step remains installed.

  4. At machine harness connector J1 or J2, measure the resistance from the solenoid signal contact to J2-3 orJ1-7.

Expected Result:

There should be less than 5.0 ohms resistance.

Results:

  • OK - There is less than 5.0 ohms resistance. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to Test Step 4.

  • NOT OK - There is not less than 5.0 ohms resistance.

Repair: There is an open circuit in the machine harness. The open is in the wire for the solenoid signal or in wire 975-WH(White) of the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    STOP

Test Step 4. DETERMINE IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE IS ACTIVE.

  1. Inspect the contacts and clean the contacts of the harness connectors.

  2. Reconnect all harness connectors.

  3. Turn the key start switch to the ON position.

  4. Enter service mode of the Caterpillar Monitoring System and clear all inactive diagnostic codes.

  5. Attempt to operate the machine in all gears. All gears may not be available.

  6. Stop the machine and place the parking brake switch in the ON position.

  7. Determine if the CID 0695 FMI 05 for the solenoid has recurred.

Expected Result:

CID 0695 FMI 05 for the solenoid is recorded.

Results:

  • YES - CID 0695 FMI 05 for the solenoid is recorded.

Repair: Exit this procedure and perform the diagnostic code procedure again. If the problem persists, the ECM may have failed. Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your dealership's Technical Communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. See the Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".

    STOP

  • NO - CID 0695 FMI 05 for the solenoid is not recorded.

Repair: The problem does not exist at this time. The initial problem was probably caused by a poor electrical connection or a short at one of the harness connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation.

    STOP
