This is the procedure for inspecting the drive spool. The drive spool is located in the all wheel drive control valve. If the drive spool is worn or sticking, the following conditions may occur.
- The all wheel drive piston motors may not engage.
- The all wheel drive motors may clack too much during engagement.

Test Step 1. Perform the following test: Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting
Results:
- OK - Proceed to test step 2.
Test Step 2. Perform the following test: Hydraulic Pressure - Release
Results:
- OK - Proceed to test step 3.
Test Step 3.
- Remove plug (2), spring (3), spring (4) and drive spool (5) from all wheel drive control valve (1) .
Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a released spring force. Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment. Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to release the spring force. |

Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- Inspect spring (3), spring (4) and drive spool (5) for wear or damage.

Expected Result:
The spool valve moves freely in the all wheel drive control valve and the spool valve is not worn or damaged.
Results:
- No - Proceed to test step 4.
- Yes - Proceed to test step 5.
Test Step 4.
- Replace the worn parts or the damaged parts. If the drive spool is worn or damaged, the all wheel drive control valve must be replaced. Use a new Caterpillar part for replacement.
- Clean all parts prior to installation in all wheel drive control valve (1). Install drive spool (5), spring (4), spring (3) and plug (2) to all wheel drive control valve (1).

The worn parts or the damaged parts have been replaced.
Results:
- Repair Complete - Stop.
Test Step 5.
- Clean all parts prior to installation in all wheel drive control valve (1) .
- Install drive spool (5), spring (4), spring (3) and plug (2) to all wheel drive control valve (1) .
