Fuel System Secondary Filter - Replace

Usage:

Personal injury or death can result from a fire.

Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.

Clean up all leaked or spilled fuel. Do not smoke while working on the fuel system.

Turn the disconnect switch OFF or disconnect the battery when changing fuel filters.

NOTICE

Do not fill fuel filters with fuel before installing them. Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system parts.

This machine is equipped with two secondary spin-on filters on a single filter base. Upper filter (2) is upside-down.

Always drain the inverted upper filter before you remove either it or lower filter (1).

Replace lower filter (1) at every 250 service hour interval.

Replace upper filter (2) at every 500 service hour interval.

  1. Shut off the supply valve at the fuel tank.


    NOTICE

    Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

    Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

    Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Drain upper filter (2) (inverted filter). Loosen the filter for 1/4 turn.

    Open rear drain valve (A) first. Then, immediately open drain valve (B). Drain the fuel into a suitable container. When the fuel stops draining, keep the drain valves open.

    As the filter is loosened, additional fuel may drain from the drain valves. When the fuel stops draining, loosen the filter for an additional 1/4 turn. Observe the flow of the fuel.

    Repeat this procedure until no fuel drains from the drain valves. Close the drain valves. Properly dispose of the fuel.

    Note: Make sure that the drain valves are opened in the proper order. If you open the wrong drain valve first, an air lock in the fuel system may occur. This will not allow fuel to drain from the upper filter.

  1. If maintenance is required, remove the upper filter.

    If upper filter (2) is not being replaced, tighten the upper filter. Hand tighten the filter until the seal contacts the base. Then, tighten the filter for an additional 3/4 turn.

    Rotation index marks are positioned on the filter at 90 degree intervals. Use these rotation index marks as a guide when you tighten the filter.

    If you install a new upper filter, be sure that the old seal is removed. Coat the seal of the new filter with clean diesel fuel.

  1. Remove lower filter (1) .

    Note: Lower filter (1) has not been drained. The filter contains fuel. When you remove the lower filter, use caution in order to avoid spilling the fuel.

  1. Clean the filter mounting base. Make sure that the old seal is removed.

  1. Coat the seal of the new filter with clean diesel fuel.

  1. Install new lower filter (1). Hand tighten the filter. When the seal contacts the base, tighten the filter for an additional 3/4 turn.

    Rotation index marks are positioned on the filter at 90 degree intervals. Use these rotation index marks as a guide when you tighten the filter.

    Note: Install a new, dry filter. Never fill a new filter with fuel before you install the filter. Dirty fuel can damage the fuel injectors. This damage will cause premature problems in the fuel system.

  1. Open the fuel tank supply valve.

  1. Prime the fuel system. When you are priming the fuel system, open drain valve (B) in order to allow air to escape. See Illustration 1 for the location of valves (A) and (B) .

  1. In order to unlock the priming pump plunger, turn the handle of the priming pump counterclockwise.

    Operate the priming pump until the fuel begins to flow out of rear drain valve (A). When the fuel begins to flow from the drain, close the drain valve.

    Operate the priming pump for an additional ten strokes. These additional strokes will ensure that the remainder of the fuel system is primed. All of the air will be purged from the lines.

    Push the priming pump plunger downward. Turn the handle clockwise until the priming pump plunger is locked in the down position.

  1. Before you start the engine, make sure that the drain valves are completely closed. Start the engine. Check for leaks.
