Front Suspension Arm - Remove

Removal Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the front tires and rims. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, SENR9128, "Tire and Rim - Remove and Install" for the correct procedure.

  2. Remove the Fenders. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fender - Remove and Install". The information is in this manual.

------ WARNING! ------

At operating temperature, the hydraulic tank is hot and under pressure.

Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.

Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the filler cap slowly in order to relieve pressure.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Drain the transmission. The capacity of the transmission is 60 L (16 US gal).

  2. Attach nylon lifting straps to front suspension arm (1), as shown.

  3. Remove four bolts (2) and the washers that secure the front suspension arm to front drive axle (3).

    The front drive axle has been removed for photographic clarity.

  4. Remove two hollow dowels (4). Note the location of two hollow dowels (4) for installation purposes.

  5. Remove six bolts (9) and the washers that secure retainer (7) to front suspension arm (1). Remove retainer (7) from front suspension arm (1). Remove shims (8) that are under retainer (7). Keep the shims with the retainer.

  6. Remove two bolts (5) and the washers that secure end cap (6) to front suspension arm (1). Remove end cap (6) from front suspension arm (1).

  7. Move the front axle toward the front of the machine in order to remove front suspension arm (1). Remove suspension arm (1) from the front drive axle and pivot pin (10). Pivot pin (10) extends through frame (11). The weight of the suspension arm is 70 kg (154 lb).

    This is a view of the inside of the left machine frame.

  8. Remove two bolts (12) and the washers that secure hydraulic pipe (13) to the transmission. Move hydraulic pipe (13) aside in order to attain clearance for the removal of bolt (14) and washer (15). Remove the O-ring seal from hydraulic pipe (13).

  9. Remove bolt (14), the washer and large washer (15) that secures pivot pin (10) in frame (11). Remove pivot pin (10), spherical bearing (18), seal ring (16) and lip seal (17) as a unit from frame (11).

  10. Use a hydraulic press in order to remove spherical bearing (18), seal ring (16) and lip seal (17) from pivot pin (10).

  11. Repeat Steps 2 through 10 in order to remove the components from the other side of the machine.
