Start By:
- Release the pressure in the steering system and in the braking system. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being serviced.
- Remove the tire and the rim. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim (Front) - Remove and Install" or to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim (Rear) - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.
- Remove the axle shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Shaft - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.

NOTICE |
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |

At operating temperature, the steering and brake hydraulic oil tank is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the steering and brake hydraulic system before hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed. |

Note: Use the same removal procedure to remove the final drives, the brakes and the wheels from the front or from the rear. However, the removal procedures for the front tires and for the rear tires are different. Make sure that you use the correct procedure.

- Install Tooling (A) to final drive planetary carrier (1). Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting sling to Tooling (A) .

- Remove three bolts (2) from planetary carrier (1) .

- Use the hoist to carefully remove planetary carrier (1) from wheel assembly (3). The weight of the planetary carrier is 84 kg (185 lb).
- Remove O-ring seal (4) from planetary carrier (1) .

- Install Tooling (B) to wheel assembly (3), as shown. Attach a hoist and suitable lifting slings to Tooling (B) and wheel assembly (3) .
- Remove 24 bolts (5) and the washers.
- Use the hoist to carefully remove wheel assembly (3) and service brake (6). The combined weight of the wheel assembly and the service brake is 335 kg (740 lb).

- Remove three bolts (7) and the washers from brake piston (8) .

- Remove brake piston (8) from the axle housing. The weight of the brake piston is 16 kg (35 lb).
- Remove O-ring seal (9) .
