The parking brakes in the axles are spring applied, oil pressure released brakes. If the engine fails or a problem with the hydraulics exists, the brakes will not release. The brakes must be released manually. Use the following procedures in order to manually release the brakes.
Releasing the Brakes in the Axles
- Place wheel chocks under the tires in order to prevent the machine from moving when the brakes are released.

- Remove cover (3) on the brakes. A M12 x 25 bolt is located under the cover. This bolt is used for releasing the brakes.

Note: Brakes (1) are located on each side of differential (2). The front axle and the rear axle have brakes that need to be released.
- Thread this bolt into the tapped hole of the brakes. Turn the bolt until the bolt cannot be turned. This releases the pressure on the brake pack by fully compressing the spring.
- Perform this procedure for the other three brakes on the machine.
Placing the Transmission Gearbox in Neutral
Note: This procedure is valid for the 554 Forwarder.

554 Forwarder Gearbox Disconnect Lever |
Gearbox disconnect lever (2) is located on the left side of transmission gearbox (1) .
Note: This procedure is valid when the engine cannot be started and the machine must be towed.
- Loosen bolt (3) that locks the Gearbox disconnect lever in ON position (A) .
- Rotate the Gearbox disconnect lever clockwise into OFF position (B). The brake is now released.
- Tighten bolt (3) in order to hold the Gearbox disconnect lever in the OFF position.
- The 574 Forwarder can be placed into neutral. Disconnect the transmission wiring harness at the gearbox.
Note: This procedure is valid for the 574 Forwarder.
Note: The 574 Forwarder must be in neutral prior to towing.
- This will place the transmission into neutral.
