Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting

Usage:

IT14G 1WN
When you are analyzing a hydraulic system for poor performance, remember that correct oil flow and correct oil pressure are necessary for correct operation. Oil flow is a function of the pump output. The pump output is a function of engine speed. A restriction to the flow of oil causes oil pressure.

------ WARNING! ------

Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent possible injury, perform the procedure that follows before testing and adjusting the brake system.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Move the machine to a smooth, horizontal location. Move the machine away from other operating machines and away from personnel. Stop the engine.

  1. Permit only one operator on the machine. Keep all other personnel away from the machine or in sight of the operator.

  1. Engage the parking brake. Lower the bucket or the attachment to the ground. Put blocks in front of the wheels and behind the wheels.

  1. In order to relieve any brake oil pressure, push on the brake pedal five to ten times.

  1. Carefully loosen the filler cap on the hydraulic tank in order to release the pressure in the tank.

  1. Relieve all hydraulic pressure before loosening a fitting, a hose or a component. Relieve all hydraulic pressure before tightening a fitting, a hose or a component. Relieve all hydraulic pressure before removing a fitting, a hose or a component. Relieve all hydraulic pressure before adjusting a fitting, a hose or a component.

  1. Make sure that all oil pressure is released before you begin any work on the brake hydraulic system.
