Walk-Around Inspection

NOTICE

Accumulated grease and oil on a machine is a fire hazard. Remove this debris with steam cleaning or high pressure water, at least every 1000 hours or each time any significant quantity of oil is spilled on a machine.


Note: Watch closely for leaks. If leakage is observed, find the source and correct the leak. Check the fluid levels more frequently than the recommended interval if leakage is suspected or observed.

  1. Inspect all attachments for damage or excessive wear. Repair any damaged attachments.

  1. Inspect the attachment cylinders and the linkage for damage or excessive wear. Repair any damaged parts.

  1. Inspect the lights for broken bulbs and lenses. Replace the broken bulbs or lenses.

  1. Inspect the engine compartment and remove any trash buildup. Remove any dirt buildup on top of the crankcase guard.

  1. Inspect the engine compartment for leaks. Repair any leaks. Check around all the seals and the covers.

  1. Inspect the cooling system for leaks and faulty hoses. Correct any leaks that are found. Remove any trash buildup around the radiator.

  1. Inspect the engine air precleaner for dirt buildup. Remove any dirt or debris.

  1. Inspect the steps and the handholds for cleanliness and condition. Inspect the Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS) and the Falling Object Protective Structure (FOPS) for damage. If repairs are necessary, consult your Caterpillar dealer. Tighten any bolts that are loose on the ROPS or the FOPS.

  1. Inspect the hydraulic system for leaks. Inspect the hoses, seals, and hose flanges. Repair any leaks.

  1. Inspect the differentials and the final drives. Check under the machine for leaks.

  1. Be sure that the covers and guards are in place. Inspect the covers for damage and bolts that are loose or missing.

  1. Inspect the transmission for leaks.

  1. Inspect the operator's compartment for cleanliness. Remove all trash and dirt buildup.

  1. Visually inspect the tracks. Check for wear and excessive dirt buildup on track components. Repair tracks that are damaged or excessively worn. Tighten any loose bolts. Replace any bolts that are missing. If the track appears to be too tight or too loose, see the topic "Tracks".

  1. Make sure that the following components are in the proper working order: horn, backup alarm, lights, guards and shields, etc.
