Removal Procedure

Personal injury can result from driveline torque windup under load. Unequal wheel speed can result in driveline torque windup which can cause driveline components to be under load during disassembly. Relieve the driveline torque windup before disassembly.

1. Release the contained energy in the driveline by raising either side of the machine until the wheels are off the ground. Lower the wheels back to the ground.

2. Chock the wheels in order to stabilize the machine for maintenance.

3. Place Tooling (A) under drive shaft (1) . Use tie straps (2) in order to secure the universal joint to the floor jack.

4. Remove four bolts (3) in order to disconnect drive shaft (1) from the rear axle.

5. Remove four bolts (4) in order to disconnect drive shaft (1) from the center axle.

6. Use the floor jack in order to lower the drive shaft from the machine. The drive shaft weighs 23 kg (50 lb) .

7. Remove four bolts (5) in order to remove drive shaft universal joint (6) from drive shaft (1) .

8. Remove four bolts (7) in order to remove drive shaft universal joint (8) from drive shaft (1) .

Installation Procedure

1. Inspect all parts and clean all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

2. Install four bolts (7) in order to install drive shaft universal joint (8) to drive shaft (1) . Tighten bolts (7) to a torque of 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft) .

3. Install four bolts (5) in order to install drive shaft universal joint (6) to drive shaft (1) . Tighten bolts (5) to a torque of 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft) .

4. Use the floor jack in order to position the drive shaft to the machine. The drive shaft weighs 23 kg (50 lb) .

5. Install four bolts (4) in order to connect drive shaft (1) to the rear axle. Tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft) .

6. Install four bolts (3) in order to connect drive shaft (1) to the rear axle. Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft) .

7. Remove the floor jack from the machine.
