Hitch Drive Shaft Bearings - Remove and Install

Personal injury can result from driveline torque windup under load.

Unequal wheel speed can result in driveline torque windup which can cause driveline components to be under load during disassembly.

Relieve the driveline torque windup before disassembly.

  1. Release the contained energy in the driveline by raising either side of the machine until the wheels are off the ground. Lower the wheels back to the ground.

  1. Chock the wheels in order to stabilize the machine for maintenance.

  1. Remove four bolts (1) in order to disconnect drive shaft (2) from the center axle.

  1. Remove four bolts (3) in order to disconnect drive shaft (2) from the hitch drive shaft. Use two persons in order to remove drive shaft (2) from the machine. The weight of drive shaft (2) is 41 kg (90 lb) .

  1. Remove three nuts (4) from lockplate (5) . Remove lockplate (5) from threaded flange (6) .

  1. Remove nine nuts (7) from bearing carrier (8) . Remove threaded flange (6) by turning the flange counterclockwise.

  1. Use two persons in order to remove bearing carrier (8) and the hitch drive shaft from bearing housing (9) . The weight of carrier (8) and the hitch drive shaft is 32 kg (70 lb) .

  1. Remove lip seal (10) from bearing housing (9) .

  1. Remove bolt (14) , washer (13) and shaft yoke (12) from bearing carrier (8) and hitch drive shaft (11) .

  1. Use Tooling (A) in order to remove retaining ring (15) from bearing carrier (8) and hitch drive shaft (11) . Remove O-ring seal (16) from bearing carrier (8) .

  1. Use a hydraulic press in order to remove hitch drive shaft (11) and the roller bearing from bearing carrier (8) .

  1. Remove lip seal (17) from bearing carrier (8) .

  1. Use a hydraulic press and Tooling (B) in order to remove hitch drive shaft (11) from roller bearing (18) .

  1. Remove the universal joint (hitch). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Universal Joint (Hitch) - Remove and Install". The information is in this manual.

  1. Articulate the machine in order to have clearance for the removal of the hitch drive shaft bearing.

  1. Remove six bolts (19) that secure bearing carrier (20) to the carrier housing.

  1. Use two 3/8" 16 - NC forcing bolts (21) in order to remove bearing carrier (20) from the carrier housing. Remove bearing carrier (20) from the carrier housing. Remove the forcing bolts from the bearing carrier.

  1. Use Tooling (C) in order to remove retaining ring (23) from bearing carrier (20) and shaft yoke (24) . Remove thrust washer (22) from bearing carrier (20) .

  1. Use Tooling (D) and a hydraulic press in order to remove shaft yoke (24) from bearing carrier (20) .

  1. Use Tooling (A) in order to remove retaining ring (25) that retains roller bearing (26) in bearing carrier (20) .

  1. Remove lip seal (27) from bearing carrier (20) .

  1. Inspect all parts and clean all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

  1. Use Tooling (A) in order to install lip seal (27) to bearing carrier (20) . Install the seal with the sealing lip toward face (X) on the bearing carrier.

  1. Pack the cavity behind the lip seal with grease. Pack grease into 1/3 of the cavity. Use 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease .

  1. Use Tooling (A) and a hydraulic press in order to install roller bearing (26) in bearing carrier (20) .

  1. Use Tooling (B) in order to install retaining ring (25) that retains roller bearing (26) to bearing carrier (20) .

  1. Use a hydraulic press in order to install shaft yoke (24) in bearing carrier (20) .

  1. Install thrust washer (22) to bearing carrier (20) . Use Tooling (C) in order to install retaining ring (23) that secures shaft yoke (24) to bearing carrier (20) .

  1. Install bearing carrier (20) to the carrier housing. Install six bolts (19) that secure bearing carrier (20) to the carrier housing.

  1. Install the universal joint (hitch). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Universal Joint (Hitch) - Remove and Install". The information is in this manual.

  1. Heat roller bearing (18) in order to install the roller bearing on hitch drive shaft (11) .

  1. Use a hydraulic press in order to install hitch drive shaft (11) and roller bearing (18) to bearing carrier (8) .

  1. Use Tooling (B) in order to install retaining ring (15) to bearing carrier (8) and hitch drive shaft (11) . Install O-ring seal (16) to bearing carrier (8) .

  1. Lubricate the splines on hitch drive shaft (11) with 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease . Install bolt (14) , washer (13) and shaft yoke (12) to bearing carrier (8) and hitch drive shaft (11) .

  1. Install lip seal (10) to bearing housing (9) . The sealing lip must face away from bearing housing (9) .

  1. Lubricate the splines on the hitch drive shaft with 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease . Install bearing carrier (8) and the hitch drive shaft in bearing housing (9) .

  1. Install nine nuts (7) that secure bearing carrier (8) to the bearing housing. Tighten nuts (7) to a torque of 105 ± 20 N·m (78 ± 15 lb ft). Install threaded flange (6) to bearing carrier (8) .

  1. Remove the chocks from the front wheels. Use a lift truck in order to adjust the position of the tractor.

  1. Place Tooling (D) on the bearing housing and threaded flange (6) . Set threaded flange (6) in order to attain 0.15 mm (.006 inch) clearance to 0.4 mm (.016 inch) clearance between threaded flange (6) and the bearing housing.

  1. Install lockplate (5) to threaded flange (6) . Install three nuts (4) to lockplate (5) . Tighten nuts (4) to a torque of 105 ± 20 N·m (78 ± 15 lb ft) .

  1. Use two persons in order to install drive shaft (2) to the machine. The weight of drive shaft (2) is 41 kg (90 lb). Install four bolts (3) in order to connect drive shaft (2) to the hitch drive shaft. Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft) .

  1. Install four bolts (1) in order to connect drive shaft (2) to the center axle. Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft) .
