Engine Oil Cooler - Remove

Removal Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the engine oil filter base. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Filter Base - Remove".


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Drain the oil from the engine oil cooler into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or disposal.

  1. Remove four bolts (2) that hold the support bracket for the oil cooler to the engine.

  1. Remove four bolts (1) that hold oil cooler bonnet (6) to the engine.

  1. The weight of oil cooler (3), oil cooler bonnet (6), and elbow (5) for the oil cooler is approximately 24 kg (53 lb). Attach a lifting strap to oil cooler bonnet (6) and the elbow for the oil cooler. Attach the lifting strap to a suitable lifting device.

  1. Remove two bolts (4) that hold the elbow (5) of the oil cooler to the water pump.

  1. Use two technicians to remove oil cooler (3), oil cooler bonnet (6), and elbow (5) of the oil cooler as an assembly. The weight of oil cooler (3), oil cooler bonnet (6), and elbow (5) for the oil cooler is approximately 24 kg (53 lb).
