Engine and Torque Converter - Separate and Connect

Separation Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the engine and the torque converter. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine and Torque Converter - Remove".

  1. Install caps and plugs to all connections in order to prevent system contamination.

  2. Disconnect hose assembly (2) from relief valve (1).

  3. Attach a lifting sling to gear pump (3) and the piston pump (steering), as shown. Secure the lifting sling to a suitable lifting device.

  4. Remove two bolts (6) that hold bracket assembly (5) to torque converter (7).

  5. Remove four bolts (4) and the washers that hold gear pump (3) and the piston pump (steering) to the flywheel housing.

  6. Remove gear pump (3), the O-ring seal and the piston pump (steering) from the flywheel housing. The weight of gear pump (3) and the piston pump (steering) is 133 kg (292 lb).

  7. Install Tooling (A) to torque converter (8), as shown. Position a suitable lifting device to Tooling (A), as shown. Secure the lifting device to a hoist.

  8. Remove 11 bolts (8) that hold torque converter (7) to the flywheel housing.

  9. Remove torque converter (7) and the O-ring seal from the flywheel housing. The weight of torque converter (7) is 445 kg (980 lb).

  10. Remove bolt (11), the washer, the lock and sleeve (9) from the flywheel housing.

  11. Remove two O-ring seals (10) from sleeve (9).

Connection Procedure

Note: Check all components for wear. Check all components for damage. Replace the components, if necessary. Apply 1U-6396 O-Ring Assembly Compound to all O-ring seals prior to installation.

  1. Install two O-ring seals (10) to sleeve (9).

  2. Install sleeve (9), the lock, the washer and bolt (11) to the flywheel housing.

  3. Install Tooling (A) to torque converter (8), as shown. Position a suitable lifting device to Tooling (A), as shown. Secure the lifting device to a hoist.

  4. Put torque converter (7) and the O-ring seal in position to the flywheel housing. The weight of torque converter (7) is 445 kg (980 lb).

  5. Install 11 bolts (8) that hold torque converter (7) to the flywheel housing.

  6. Attach a lifting sling to gear pump (3) and the piston pump (steering), as shown. Secure the lifting sling to a suitable lifting device.

  7. Put gear pump (3), the O-ring seal and the piston pump (steering) in position on the flywheel housing. The weight of gear pump (3) and the piston pump (steering) is 133 kg (292 lb).

  8. Install four bolts (4) and the washers that hold gear pump (3) and the piston pump (steering) to the flywheel housing.

  9. Install two bolts (6) that hold bracket assembly (5) to torque converter (7).

  10. Connect hose assembly (2) to relief valve (1).

End By:

  1. Install the engine and the torque converter. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine and Torque Converter - Install".
