Overall Width
In order to calculate the width of the machine, add 800 mm (31.5 inch) to the gauge of the belts. See the example for a machine with gauge of 1524 mm (60 inch).
1524 mm (60 inch)     |
+     | 800 mm (31.5 inch)     |
=     | 2324 mm (91.5 inch)     |
Note: Add an additional 13 mm (.5 inch) when the machine is equipped with 813 mm (32 inch) belts.
Ground Clearance
The ground clearance for this machine is 480 mm (18.9 inch) when you operate in 762 mm (30 inch) rows.
Turning Radius
This machine is capable of counterrotating the belts in order to complete a turn within the length of the machine.

Transmission
Illustration 8 | g00344647 |
The transmission is a direct drive power shift transmission. The transmission has the following standard features:
- 16 forward speeds
- Nine reverse speeds
- Programmable electronic controls
- Six methods of shifting
An optional creeper transmission provides an additional 16 forward speeds and an additional nine reverse speeds. All of the creeper speeds are below 3.2 km/h (2 mph). When the creeper speed is engaged the speed reduction is 10.6:1.
Electrical System
Electrical System     | |
---|---|
Type     | 12 Volt     |
Alternator     | 145 Ampere     |
Batteries     | Two 12 Volt batteries with 950 cold cranking amp for each battery     |
Lights
Illustration 9 | g00344895 |
- Four headlamps are mounted on the front of the hood.
- Two work lights are mounted on the front of the hood.
- Two front floodlights are mounted on the fuel tank.
- Two front floodlights are mounted on the roof.
- Five rear floodlights are mounted on the rear of the machine.
- The machine has hazard lamps and turn signals.
Brakes
Illustration 10 | g00344896 |
The machine uses oil cooled multi-disc brakes. One multiple disc brake is located on each side of the machine. Both brakes are actuated by the service brake pedal.
The parking brake is a dry disc brake. The parking brake acts on the input shaft for the differential steer unit. The parking brake can be used as a secondary brake system.
Undercarriage
Illustration 11 | g00488159 |
The undercarriage uses the Caterpillar Mobil-trac system with five axles on each undercarriage. There is rubber isolation between the front support beam and the main structure of the machine.
Two mounting locations allow chemical tanks to be mounted to the outside of the undercarriage. For more information about mounting chemical tanks, consult any Caterpillar dealer.
Track Gauge
Reference: For more information, see Special Instruction, SEHS9982, "Procedure to Change Track Gauge".
Use spacers to adjust the gauge in increments of 50.8 mm (2 inch).
Machine With a 1524 mm (60 inch) Gauge
The gauge can be increased to a gauge of 2286 mm (90 inch).
Machine With a 2032 mm (80 inch) Gauge
The gauge can be increased to 3048 mm (120 inch). Also, a single pair of 508 mm (20 inch) spacers can increase the gauge to 3048 mm (120 inch).
Implement Hydraulics
Illustration 12 | g00488148 |
The implement hydraulic system is a closed center, load sensing hydraulic system. The hydraulic system compensates for the flow and for the pressure.

Steering
Illustration 13 | g00344900 |
This machine is equipped with a Caterpillar differential steering system. The steering system controls the difference in speed between the two belts during turns. The steering system consists of the following components:
- Three planetary gear sets
- A bidirectional hydraulic steering motor
Three-Point Hitch
Illustration 14 | g00488155 |
The three-point hitch is electronically controlled. The three-point hitch will accept Category III implements, and Category IIIN implements.
The standard lift capacity of the three-point hitch is 5669 kg (12,500 lb). An optional configuration raises the lift capacity to 6802 kg (15,000 lb).
Note: The lift capacity of the three-point hitch is rated at 610 mm (24 inch) behind the ball ends.
Power Take-Off
Illustration 15 | g00489760 |
This machine is equipped with a 1000 rpm power take-off (PTO). A 44.5 mm (1.75 inch) shaft is supplied as standard equipment. The PTO shaft has a 20 tooth spline.
Drawbar
Illustration 16 | g00525908 |
The standard drawbar can be allowed to swing or the drawbar can be secured in different positions. Machines that are not equipped with a three-point hitch can be equipped with a wide swinging drawbar.
The drawbar can be automatically coupled to the implement.
