Fuel Tank - Install

Usage:

793C 4AR

Installation Procedure

    Illustration 1g00471151

  1. If necessary, clean the paint from the machined surfaces of the mounts for the fuel tank.

  2. Use eight mountings (22), the eight washers, four bolts (20), the four washers, and four nuts (23) in order to install plate assembly (21).

    Note: Tighten all bolts (20) to a torque of 460 ± 60 N·m (339.3 ± 44.3 lb ft).

  3. Determine the thickness of the shim packs for the mounts for the fuel tanks in the following manner:

      Illustration 2g00471376

Note: Do not install any shims at this time.

    1. Install cap (12), the two washers, and two bolts (11) on the frame. Tighten two bolts (11) to a torque of 800 ± 100 N·m (590.1 ± 73.8 lb ft).

    2. Measure the vertical inside diameter between cap (12) and the frame. This measurement is Dimension A.

    3. Measure the outside diameter of the bar assembly for the fuel tank. This measurement is Dimension B.

    4. In order to determine the desired thickness of shim pack (13), subtract Dimension B from Dimension A. Assemble the shim pack in order to achieve a tolerance of 0.00 to −0.12 mm (0.00 to −0.005 inch). Record the required thickness of shim pack (13) after the fuel tank is positioned on the truck frame.

    5. Remove bolts (11) and cap (12).

    6. Repeat Steps 3.a through 3.e for remaining cap (15), two bolts (14), the two washers, and shim pack (16).

  4. Use a suitable hoist to position fuel tank (19) and plate assembly (21) on the machine frame. The weight of the fuel tank is 1110 kg (2447.1 lb).

    NOTICE

Failure to follow the recommended procedure or the specified tooling that is required for the procedure could result in damage to components.

To avoid component damage, follow the recommended procedure using the recommended tools.

Note: During installation, be certain that the guard for the sensor of the fuel tank is not damaged.

  5. Install shim pack (13), cap (12), the two washers, and two bolts (11). Tighten two bolts (11) to a torque of 800 ± 100 N·m (590.1 ± 73.8 lb ft).

  6. Install shim pack (16), cap (15), the two washers, and two bolts (14). Tighten two bolts (14) to a torque of 800 ± 100 N·m (590.1 ± 73.8 lb ft).

  8. Install the electrical connection of sensor (10) for the VIMS that is connected to the wiring connections on the truck frame.

Note: Install the wire assembly in the channel on the bottom of the fuel tank.

  9. Install the guard on the bottom of the fuel tank with the six washers and the six bolts. The guard, the washers, and the bolts are not shown. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 55 ± 10 N·m (40.6 ± 7.4 lb ft).

  10. Install O-ring seal (5) and hose assembly (4) to the elbow on the primary fuel filter.

Note: Lubricate the O-ring seals with the fluid that is being sealed.

  11. Install O-ring seal (7) and hose assembly (6) to the swivel elbow on the fuel tank.

  12. Install mud flap (3) with five bolts (2), five hard washers, and five nuts (1). Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 55 ± 10 N·m (40.6 ± 7.4 lb ft).

End By:

  1. Disconnect the truck body retaining cable. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Truck Body Retaining Cable - Remove and Install" for the correct procedure.
