Usage:
1088 XLC (9BW),
1088 LTC (3SZ),
554 (1AM),
574 (1FM) Forwarders
Description of Change: A new hose routing is used for the 170-1988 Hose Assembly and 170-1992 Hose Assembly to prevent interference during grapple operation. The new hose routing is effective with 554 (1AM215-Up) and 574 (1FM241-Up) Forwarders. The new routing is adaptable to first production for all machines listed.
Modification Procedure:
Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure.
Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.
Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.
Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.
To prevent possible injury, perform the procedure that follows before testing and adjusting the hydraulic system.

NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, testing, adjusting, and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
|
1. Permit only one operator on the machine. Keep other personnel away from the machine.
2. Park the machine on a smooth, level surface. Move away from other operating machines and away from personnel. Lower all attachments to the ground.
3. Install the steering frame lock so that the machine cannot articulate.
4. Engage the parking brake. Place blocks in front of the wheels. Place blocks behind the wheels.
5. Stop the engine by turning the engine start switch key to the OFF position and remove the key.
6. Before beginning modification, refer to Service Manual Module RENR3025, Disassembly and Assembly 554 Forwarder and 574 Forwarder Machine Systems, "Grapple - Remove", Page 61.
7. Inspect the 170-1988 Hose Assembly and 170-1992 Hose Assembly on the grapple cylinder.
Correct 170-1988 Hose Assembly and 170-1992 Hose Assembly Routing.
8. The correct routing is shown in the illustrations above. Notice that 170-1988 Hose Assembly (1) and 170-1992 Hose Assembly (2) are not in line with the plane of the hydraulic cylinder, which allows for the lines not to cross.
Incorrect 170-1988 Hose Assembly and 170-1992 Hose Assembly Routing.
9. The incorrect routing is shown in the illustrations above. Notice that 170-1992 Hose Assembly and 170-1988 Hose Assembly (3) are in line with the plane of the hydraulic cylinder. If the grapple was assembled in this arrangement, the 174-4806 Grapple Rotator will need to be unbolted from the grapple and indexed 90° from the current position to allow the proper hose routing. Refer to Service Manual Module RENR3025, Disassembly and Assembly 554 Forwarder and 574 Forwarder Machine Systems, "Grapple - Remove", Page 61.
