Reference: Service Manual Module SENR6982, "Transmission Electronic Control For Countershaft Transmissions", Page 22, 23.

On the three pages listed in the references above, there are three separate but similar versions of the procedure "Programming The Transmission ECM Transmission Configuration Code Without An ECAP". The three versions have the same "Step 6" and "Step 7" which require the same correction.

In Step 6 (programming the first digit of the configuration code) and Step 7 (programming the second digit of the configuration code) the technician is told to "Place the transmission control lever in the neutral position" and then to "Remove jumpers completely out of the diagnostic receptacle." These two sentences are in the wrong order, and should be reversed. On page 24 of SENR9162 "Transmission Electronic Control For Countershaft Transmissions" and pages 22 and 23 of SENR6982 "Transmission Electronic Control For Countershaft Transmissions" replace steps 6 and 7 with the following:

6. Jumper Sockets 1, 2 and 3 on the diagnostic receptacle. Place the transmission control lever in the Forward gear which corresponds to the first digit of the desired transmission configuration code. For this example, place the transmission control lever in Fourth Forward. Wait until the transmission indicator lamp (1) flashes out this digit. Remove jumpers completely out of the diagnostic receptacle. Place the transmission control lever in the neutral position. The first digit is programmed.

7. Jumper Sockets 1, 2 and 4 on the diagnostic receptacle. Place the transmission control lever in the Forward gear which corresponds to the second digit of the desired transmission configuration code. For this example, place the transmission control lever in First Forward. Wait until the transmission indicator lamp (1) flashes out this digit. Remove jumpers completely out of the diagnostic receptacle. Place the transmission control lever in the neutral position. The second digit is programmed.
