Description of Change: The 142-9660 Conditioner Group can leak condensation onto the operator. The 142-9660 Conditioner Group is part of 148-9152 Installation Kit.
Adaptable To: The 142-9660 Conditioner Group was used in production machines within the following serial number ranges:
- 416C (4ZN1204-3363, 1WR439-1246, 5YN2636-3032),
- 426C (6XN439-985, 1YR234-427, 7WN277-279),
- 428C (8RN1148-1245, 2CR3038-3469),
- 436C (8TN234-357),
- 438C (1JR410-413, 2DR781-825, 1TR671-710)
- 426C (6XN439-985, 1YR234-427, 7WN277-279),
The potential for a condensation leak is caused by air leaking through a gap in the gasket between the two evaporator tubes at the inlet to the unit. The procedure to stop this leak is adaptable to all C-Series Backhoe Loaders that were manufactured with the 142-9660 Conditioner Group, or had 142-9660 Conditioner Group installed due to previous mechanical problems.
The 148-9152 Installation Kit and the 142-9660 Conditioner Group are being reworked to stop the leak. A green dot will be located near the part number tag to indicate that the units ordered from the Caterpillar parts system have been reworked.
If you have a new 142-9660 Conditioner Group from either a machine listed in the above serial number ranges, or from ordering 148-9152 Installation Kit and it leaks condensation onto the operator, the following steps can be taken to eliminate the problem.
Repair Procedure:
(1) Cut a piece of 5P-5924 Seal Stock 30 mm X 50 mm (1.2 in X 1.9 in).
(2) Place the seal stock between the two evaporator tubes with the 50 mm length in the horizontal position to seal across the other gasket.
(3) Cut a 250 mm length of 5P-7070 Insulation Strip.
(4) Wrap the insulation strip around the two tubes. Place the center of the insulation strip around the tube closest to the steel plate and wrap in toward the other tube.
(5) It is important to wrap 5P-7070 Insulation Strip tightly against 5P-5924 Seal Stock to hold the seal stock in place and to enclose the area between the two tubes.
