Usage:
824G (4SN) Wheel Tractors;
825G (6RN) Soil Compactors;
826G (7LN) Landfill Compactors;
980G (9CM, 2KR, 2SR) Wheel Loaders
Description of Change: A new vane pump group replaced the former vane pump group. The new vane pump group assures clearance between the shoulder of the pump shaft and the drive gear in the torque converter group.
Without clearance between the shaft shoulder and drive gear, pump failure may occur.
Two conditions can cause failure of former pump groups:
-
- 1. Not enough clearance between the shoulder and drive gear, could interfere with the drive gear causing a thrust load on the pump shaft bearing, resulting in bearing and pump failure.
See Procedure 1. Checking Clearance between Shaft Shoulder and Drive Gear.
-
- 2. Misalignment of the pump with the drive gear, can cause side loads to the pump shaft, resulting in bearing or pump shaft failure, or both.
See Procedure 2. Checking Alignment of Vane Pump Group with Torque Converter Cover.
Adaptable To: The new 143-9722 Vane Pump Group was effective with the following machines:
980G (2KR1042), excluding (2KR1401-1536) Wheel Loaders.
980G (9CM596), excluding (9CM698-Up) Wheel Loaders.
NOTE: 980G (2KR1401-1536 and (9CM698) Wheel Loaders used the 141-8208 Vane Pump Group. The 141-8208 Vane Pump Group has the correct clearance between the shoulder of the pump shaft and the drive gear.
143-9722 Vane Pump group is used on 980G (2KR1042-1400), (2KR1537-Up), and (9CM596-697) Wheel Loaders.
The new 143-9722 Vane Pump Group is a direct replacement for the former 110-8478 Vane Pump Group used on 980G (2KR1-1041) and (9CM1-595) Wheel Loaders.
110-8478 Vane Pump group is used on 980G (2KR1-1041) and (9CM1-595) Wheel Loaders.
110-8478 Vane Pump Group can be upgraded to the new 143-9722 Vane Pump Group by replacing the 6E-1241 Shaft with the new 143-9721 Shaft.
NOTE: Procedure 2, Checking Alignment of Vane Pump Group with Torque Converter Cover, applies to all of the following machines to first production:
- 824G (4SN) Wheel Tractors
- 825G 6RN) Soil Compactors
- 826G (7LN Landfill Compactors
- 980G (9CM, 2KR, 2SR) Wheel Loaders
- 825G 6RN) Soil Compactors
Typical Vane Pump Group and Pump Drive
Procedure 1. Checking Clearance Between Shaft Shoulder And Drive Gear.
Check clearance between the shoulder of the pump shaft and the drive gear in one of two ways.
1. Using "Plastigage" between the pump mounting face and the mounting face of the torque converter cover, assemble pump to cover (6).
NOTE: "Plastigage" is available from automotive supply houses.
2. Using a depth gauge, measure from the mounting face for the pump on the torque converter cover (6) to the end of the drive gear (5). (Dimension D).
NOTE: Dimension D should be greater than Dimension B.
NOTE: If either method above shows interference between the pump shaft shoulder and the drive gear, any one of the following four solutions will assure clearance.
1. Remove approximately 3.0 mm (.12 in) from the end of the pump drive gear (5).
2. Replace former 105-0229 Gear-Drive with new 144-0214 Gear-Drive (5).
3. Replace former 110-8478 Vane Pump Group with new 143-9722 Vane Pump Group.
4. Replace former 6E-1241 Shaft-Pump with new 143-9721 Shaft-Pump.
NOTE: If pump shaft (4) or shaft bearing (1) has failed, install new 143-9721 Shaft-Pump (4), 3L-1425 Bearing-Ball (1), 5P-0904 Seal-Lip Type (2), and 6V-2318 Seal-Lip Type (3).
For machines using the 4Z-6297 Pump Group and fire resistant fluid (water glycol), install new 143-9721 Shaft-Pump (4), 3L-1425 Bearing-Ball (1), 7X-4750 Seal-Lip Type (2), and 7X-4751 Seal-Lip Type (3).
Procedure 2. Checking Alignment Of Vane Pump Group With Torque Converter Cover.
1. To determine pump failure caused by misalignment, mount a dial indicator on the end of the drive gear (5) for the pump. (A magnetic base is needed).
2. Place indicator in contact with the pump pilot bore in torque convertor cover (6).
3. Bar the engine over and check indicator dial during one full revolution of pump drive gear (5).
NOTE: If the total indicator reading (TIR) is more than 0.305 mm (.0120 in), replace 3T-4362 Cover-Torque Convertor (6).
NOTE: If pump shaft (4) or shaft bearing (1) has failed, install new 143-9721 Shaft-Pump (4), 3L-1425 Bearing-Ball (1), 5P-0904 Seal-Lip Type (2), and 6V-2318 Seal-Lip Type (3).
For machines using the 4Z-6297 Pump Group and fire resistant fluid (water glycol) install new 143-9722 Shaft-Pump (4), 3L-1425 Bearing-Ball (1), 7X-4750 Seal-Lip Type (2), and 7X-4751 Seal-Lip Type (3).
