The material used to make hoses for air conditioners with R-134a refrigerant is different than the hose material used in systems with R-12 refrigerant. Bulk hose material is now available for use with air conditioners that have R-134a refrigerant.
The availability of the bulk hose makes it possible for dealers and users to make hoses with reusable fittings for air conditioner systems with R-134a refrigerant. The new hose material can be used to fabricate hose assemblies for machines that were delivered from the factory with R-134a refrigerant or that were retrofitted to R-34a refrigerant in the field.
The part numbers and sizes of the new bulk hose are given in the chart.
All the hoses do not have to be replaced when a machine is being retrofitted with R-134a refrigerant, since the R-12 type hoses will be satisfactory if they have been used for several hours. The R-12 oil will permeate the inner liner of the original hose and cause it to swell a small amount. The swelling will prevent the R-134a refrigerant from leaking. A new hose for a system with R-134a refrigerant should be made of the new R-134a bulk hose material.
