3408 VEHICULAR ENGINE FOR 768C TRACTOR & 769C TRUCK Caterpillar

Crankshaft Front Seal And Wear Sleeve

Usage:

Remove Crankshaft Front Seal And Wear Sleeve (Earlier And Later)

START BY:

a. remove radiator

b. remove vibration damper and crankshaft pulley

NOTICE

The crankshaft seal and wear sleeve come as a set and must not be separated from each other at any time. Carefully read Special Instruction, Form No. SMHS8508, that is included with each seal and wear sleeve before any handling of the seal group is made.

1. Use a sharp punch and a hammer to put four equally spaced holes in seal (1).

2. Install the tip of tool (A) into the seal, and use the slide hammer to pull it out of the timing gear housing. Change the location of tool (A) in the seal in order to pull the seal out evenly.

3. Install 5P7314 Distorter Ring (3) [part of tooling (B)] in the space where the seal was removed.

NOTICE

Be careful not to damage the crankshaft surface.

4. Use 5P7312 Distorter (2) [part of tooling (B)] to distort the wear sleeve. Put the end of the distorter in the space where the seal was removed.

5. Turn the distorter to cause distortion to the wear sleeve. Move the distorter to another position, and turn the distorter again. Do this procedure until the wear sleeve is loose on the crankshaft.

6. Remove the distorter, distorter ring and wear sleeve.

Install Crankshaft Front Seal And Wear Sleeve (Earlier)

1. Install locator (1) and bolts (2) on the front of the crankshaft.

2. Use 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer to clean the outside diameter of the crankshaft flange and the inside diameter of the wear sleeve.

3. Put clean engine oil on the lip of seal (7) and on the outside diameter of wear sleeve (6). Install seal (7) on wear sleeve (6) as shown.

NOTICE

Be sure the lip of the seal is toward the inside of the engine and the outside diameter bevel of the wear sleeve is toward the outside of the engine.

4. Put wear sleeve (6) and the lip-type seal in position as a unit on locator (1).

5. Install spacer (3) on the stud of locator (1).

6. Put installer (5) in position on locator (1).

NOTICE

On some early engines, if the seal goes against the bottom of the bore, a resistance (increase in torque) will be felt on nut (4). Do not tighten nut (4) too tight or the case (body) of the seal will be damaged.

7. Put clean engine oil on the face of washer on nut (4) that contacts the installer.

8. Install nut (4) on locator (1).

9. Tighten nut (4) until the inside surface of installer (5) comes in contact with spacer (3).

10. Remove tooling (A), and check the wear sleeve and seal for the correct position after installation. The distance from the front face of the crankshaft to the front edge of the wear sleeve must be 0.254 ± 0.508 or -0.254 mm (.01 + .02 or -.01 in.). The distance from the front edge of the crankshaft to the metal face of the seal must be 1.27 mm (.05 in.).

END BY:

a. install vibration damper and crankshaft pulley

b. install radiator

Install Crankshaft Front Seal And Wear Sleeve (Later)

NOTICE

Some 3408 Vehicular Engines used in 769C Trucks and 768C Tractors (Engine Serial Numbers 48W3846 to 48W5766) may have a counterbore in the timing gear housing.

The existing bore diameter in the timing gear housing for the crankshaft front seal is 186.093 ± 0.038 mm (7.3265 ± .0015 in.). The timing gear housing can be modified by boring the seal bore completely through to a diameter 186.144 ± 0.038 mm (7.3285 ± .0015 in.).

1. Fasten tooling (A) to the crankshaft.

2. Use 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer to clean the outside diameter of the crankshaft flange and the inside diameter of the wear sleeve.

3. Put 9S3265 Retaining Compound on the outside diameter of the crankshaft flange and the inside diameter of the wear sleeve.

NOTICE

Do not separate the lip-type seal from the wear sleeve. The material in the large lip of the seal can be damaged easily. A scratch or rub (not visible) from a finger can damage the seal enough that it cannot be used. Install the sleeve in the seal. Once there is separation of the sleeve and lip-type seal they cannot be used again and must be replaced with a new seal group.

Do not use any type of lubrication during installation of the seal group. If any type of lubrication is used in the installation of the seal group, early seal failure can result.

4. Put seal group (1) in position on tooling (A). Be sure direction arrows on the seal are the same as crankshaft rotation.

5. Put clean engine oil on the face of washer on nut (2) [part of tooling (B)] that contacts the installer.

6. Install tooling (B) onto tooling (A), and install nut (2) [part of tooling (B)] on the threaded shaft of tooling (A).

7. Tighten nut (2) until tooling (B) contacts tooling (A).

8. Remove tooling (A) and (B), and check the wear sleeve and lip-type seal for the correct installation dimension. The wear sleeve must be flush with the front face of the crankshaft within ± 0.13 mm (± .005 in.). The distance from the front edge of the crankshaft to the metal face of the seal must be 4.90 ± 0.60 mm (.193 ± .024 in.).

END BY:

a. install vibration damper and crankshaft pulley

b. install radiator
