Governor

Usage:

Remove Governor

START BY:

a. remove fuel ratio control

b. remove governor shutoff solenoid

1. Remove the cotter pin and pin (1) that connects the linkage to the lever.

2. Remove the bolt, and disconnect clip (3) that holds the fuel line to governor base.

3. Disconnect wire assembly (4) from the governor plate.

4. Remove the bolts and plate (2) from the governor.

5. Remove bolt (8), stop collar (7) and the spring from the governor.

NOTE: Plate (6) can be removed for easier access to bolt (8). Remove the bolt, cover (5) and bolt (9).

6. Install tool (A) in the fuel injection pump housing. Move governor control lever (10) until tool (A) is in place and the racks are in the center (zero) position.

7. Remove bolts (11) and governor housing (12).

8. Remove the seat, one flat washer, two spring washers and spring (13).

9. Disconnect fuel lines (15) from governor plate (14).

10. Remove the bolts and governor plate (14) from the fuel injection pump.

NOTE: It is possible to remove the governor and governor plate as a unit. The above steps must be followed before the governor can be installed again on the injection pump housing.

Install Governor


NOTICE

The drive assembly must be removed from the governor plate before the governor plate is installed for correct alignment. The drive assembly can be damaged if it is installed with the governor plate and is not in alignment with the drive pinion assembly.


1. Install a new gasket on the injection pump housing.

2. Make sure tool (A) holds the racks in the center (zero) position.

3. Put governor plate (1) in position on the fuel pump housing. Make sure the dowels in governor plate (1) are in alignment with the holes in the injection pump housing. Install the bolts.

4. Install ring (2) in gear assembly (3). Make sure the dowels in gear assembly (3) are in the center of the slots in ring (2).

5. Install drive assembly (4), the spring and ring (6) in gear assembly (5) as shown. Be sure the dowels in gear assembly (3) and the holes in drive assembly (4) are in alignment.

6. Use tool (B) to install ring (5) in the gear assembly.

7. Install spring (9), the spring washer, the flat washer, the spring washer and seat (7).

8. Connect fuel lines (8) and wire assembly (10) to the governor plate.

9. Install a new gasket (13) and governor housing (11) on the governor plate with bolts (12).

10. Remove tool (A), and install the plug.

11. Install the spring, stop collar (14) on the governor bolt with bolt (15).

12. Install a new gasket and cover assembly (16) on the governor housing.

NOTE: There is a strainer assembly in the cover assembly. The strainer assembly is installed with the mesh (screen) toward the governor housing.

13. Install new gaskets and plate assembly (17) and cover (19) on the governor housing.

14. Connect linkage (18) on the governor lever with the pin and the cotter pin.

15. Check the governor adjustment. See Governor Adjustment in Testing And Adjusting.

b. install governor shutoff solenoid

Disassemble Governor

START BY:

a. remove governor

1. Loosen the bolt, and remove lever (3) from the shaft.

2. Remove strainer (2) and cover (1).

3. Bend the locks back, and remove four bolts (6) and levers (4) and (5) from the shaft.

4. Remove shaft (7) and the washer from cover (1).

5. Remove insulator (8) from the cover.

6. Remove two seals (9) and bearings (10) from the cover.

7. Put a mark and high idle screws (11), and make a note of each turn until the idle screws are removed from the governor housing. This is done to get the approximate setting for assembly purposes. Remove the O-ring seals from the idle screws.

8. Bend lock (12) down, and remove the two bolts. Remove torque spring group (13).

9. Bend the lock down, and remove bolt (15).

10. Remove shaft (14) and control lever (16) from the governor housing.

------ WARNING! ------

To prevent possible personal injury, care must be taken when pin (17) is removed. The spring and plunger behind pin (17) are under spring force.

--------WARNING!------

11. Remove pin (17), the spring and the plunger from the control lever.

12. Remove band assembly (18) from the lever assembly.

13. Remove two seals (20) and bearing (19) from the governor housing.

14. Remove spring (22) from governor bolt (21).

15. Remove seat (23) from riser (24).

16. Remove the dowel from riser (24).

17. Remove riser (24) and governor bolt (21) as a unit from governor plate (25).

18. Remove governor bolt (21) from riser (24).

19. Remove spring (27) and washer (26) from the sleeve.

20. Remove sleeve (28) from the servo piston valve.

21. Remove ring (32), large race (31), bearing (29) and small race (30) from sleeve (28).

22. Remove lock (34) from flyweights (33).

23. Remove flyweight (33) from the governor plate.

24. Turn the governor plate over, and bend locks (36) down. Remove bolts (37), bracket (35) and the servo piston assembly from the governor plate.

25. Remove dowel (43), lever (44) and the servo piston assembly from bracket (35).

26. Remove pin (42) and piston (38) from sleeve (40).

27. Remove valve (39) from piston (38).

28. Remove O-ring seal (41) from sleeve (40).

29. Hit (tap) lightly on cylinder (45) to remove it from the governor plate.

30. Remove O-ring seals (46) from cylinder (45).

31. Use tool (A) to remove retaining ring (47) from the gear assembly.

32. Remove ring (51), spring (50), drive assembly (48) and ring (49) from gear assembly (52).

33. Use tool (B) to remove ring (53) from drive gear assembly (52). Remove drive gear assembly (52) from the governor plate.

34. If dowel replacement is needed, remove dowels (55), (56) and (57) from the governor plate.

35. Remove bearing (54) from the governor plate.

Assemble Governor

1. If a replacement of the dowels in the governor plate is necessary, see the illustration for correct installation dimensions.

2. Install bearing (1) for drive gear (2) in governor plate (3) with tooling (A) until it is 0.51 ± 0.25 mm (.020 ± .010 in.) below the top surface of the governor plate.

3. Put clean engine oil on the inside diameter of bearing (1). Install drive gear (2) in governor plate (3).

4. Turn governor plate (3) over, and install snap ring (4) that holds drive gear (2) in place.

5. Install O-ring seals (6) on cylinder (5).

6. Put clean engine oil on the O-ring seals on cylinder (5). Install cylinder (5) in the governor plate with the notch in the cylinder in alignment with the bolt hole in the governor plate as shown.

7. Install the O-ring seal on sleeve (9).

8. Put clean engine oil on piston (7), sleeve (9) and valve (8). Install sleeve (9) on piston (7) and valve (8) in piston (7) as shown.

9. Install the servo piston assembly in cylinder (5). Valve (8), sleeve (9) and piston (7) are parts of the servo piston assembly.

10. Put lever (11) in position in bracket (10), and install pin (12).

11. Install pin (13) in bracket (10) with the grooves in pin (13) engaged with lever (11) and with groove (14) away from bracket (10) as shown.

12. Put bracket (10) in position on governor plate (3) with pin (13) engaged with the servo piston assembly as shown. Install the locks and bolts that hold bracket (10) to the governor plate.

13. Check to make sure each weight assembly moves freely on its pin. Put clean engine oil on the inside diameter bore of flyweight and gear assembly (15).

14. Put flyweight and gear assembly (15) in position on the servo piston cylinder. Install lockring (16) on the flyweight and gear assembly (15). Make sure the ends of lockring (16) are engaged in the groove of the servo piston cylinder.

15. Install small race (18), bearing (19) and large race (20) on sleeve (17) as shown. Install ring (21) in the groove in sleeve (17).

16. Put sleeve (17) and the seal in position on the servo piston valve. Make an alignment of the holes in the sleeve and the servo piston valve.

17. Install spring (23) and washer (22) in position on top of sleeve (17).

18. Put governor bolt (24) inside riser (25). Put seat (26) and bolt (24) in position on sleeve (17) with the holes in alignment with the holes in riser (17) and the servo piston valve. Lift seat (26) and install dowel (27) in the holes. Lower seat (26) to hold the pin in place.

19. Install spring washer (28) over the governor bolt so the side that has a curve toward the inside (concave) is away from riser (25).

20. Use tooling (A) to install bearing (30). Dimension "Z" is 43.38 ± .015 mm (1.708 ± .0006 in.).

21. Use tooling (A) to install bearing (29). Dimension "X" is 25.35 ± 0.13 mm (.998 ± .005 in.).

22. Check dimension "Y". Dimension "Y" must be 60.58 ± 0.13 mm (2.385 ± .005 in.).

23. Use tool (A) to install the lip-type seals in the governor housing. Install each seal with the lip toward the inside.

24. Install band assembly (35) on lever assembly (32).

25. Install plunger (34), spring (33) and pin (31) in lever assembly (32).

26. Put lever assembly (32) in position in governor housing (36). Install shaft (37) in housing (36) and lever assembly (32).

27. Assemble the torque spring group in the following sequence: insulator (45), bar (46), spacer (44) and shim spacer (40), spring (43), spacer (42), the contact (39), insulator (41), retainer (40) and lock (38).

28. Install torque spring group (49) on the governor housing.

29. Install the O-ring seals (47) on high and low idle screws (48). Install the high and low idle screws (48) in governor housing (36).

30. Install insulator (50) in governor cover (51). Tighten the insulator to a torque of 4.5 ± 0.6 N·m (40 ± 5 lb.in.).

31. Use tooling (A) to install the two bearings and seals in governor cover (51) with the lip toward the outside as shown.

32. Put clean engine oil on the lips of the seals.

33. Install washer (53) and shaft (52) in the governor cover.

34. Install levers (55) and (56) with the locks and bolts (54) that hold them in place. The maximum end play of the shaft must not be more than 1.016 mm (.0400 in.).

35. Install strainer assembly (57) in governor cover (51) with the screen side away from the cover as shown.

END BY:
