SUPPLEMENT FOR 793B TRUCK ENGINE Caterpillar

Air Conditioning Compressor

Usage:

Remove & Install Air Conditioning Compressor

------ WARNING! ------

Always wear goggles when working on air conditioning systems. The system is under pressure at all times, engine running or not. Escaping Freon-12 (C C12 F2 Dichloro Difluoro Methane) can cause freezing of human flesh.

Do not smoke while working on air conditioning. Inhaling Freon-12 through any smoking material, although not toxic or flammable, can cause violent illness. Also heat must never be applied to a charged system. See Air Conditioning And Heating Service Manual Form No. SENR3334-01, for more information on removal and installation of lines and refrigerant from the system.

--------WARNING!------

1. Purge the air conditioning system. See the topic Purging The System located in the Air Conditioning And Heating Service Manual, Form No. SENR3334-01.

2. Disconnect hose assemblies (5) and (6) from the air conditioning compressor. Put plugs and caps on all of the openings.

3. Remove the bolts and guard assembly (4) from the front of the air conditioning compressor.

4. Disconnect two wires (1) from the air conditioning compressor.

5. Loosen two nuts (2) to release the tension on the V-belt. Remove the V-belt from the pulley on the air conditioning compressor.

6. Remove the nut that holds the adjusting rod to the compressor.

7. Remove the bolts that hold air conditioning compressor (3) to the bracket, and remove the compressor.

NOTE: The following steps are for installation of the air conditioning compressor.

8. Put air conditioning compressor (3) in position on the bracket, and install the bolts that hold it in place.

9. Put the adjusting rod in position on the air conditioning compressor, and install the nut that holds it.

10. Put the V-belt in position on the pulley. Use two nuts (2) to adjust the belt tension. Use a belt tension gauge such as a Borroughs Tool Company (Part No. BT-33-95), or equivalent, to check the belt tension. See the topic "Belt Tension Chart" in the Testing & Adjusting Manual for the correct belt tension.

11. Connect two wires (1) to the air conditioning compressor.

12. Put guard assembly (4) in position, and install the bolts that hold it in place.

13. Connect hose assemblies (5) and (6).

14. See Air Conditioning And Heating Service Manual, Form No. SENR3334-01, for the correct procedure for evacuating and charging the system.
