Drive Pinion

Usage:

Disassemble & Assemble Drive Pinion

Start By:

a. remove steering housings

b. remove differential

Fluid Spillage Containment

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTE: Front axle removed for better photographic illustration

1. Remove nut and washer (2) and remove drive yoke (1).

2. Use a soft hammer to drive out pinion (3).

3. Remove spacing ring (4) from drive pinion (3).

4. Using Tooling (A) remove bearing from drive pinion.

5. Pry shaft seal (5) out and remove released bearing inner race.

6. Use a hammer and punch to remove bearing cup (6) and the shim from the axle housing.

NOTE: To determine shim thickness use the following procedure.

7. Read the dimension stamped on the housing. Dimension 119.79 mm (4.716 in).

8. Read dimension stamped on the pinion. Dimension 88.50 mm (3.484 in).

9. Determine the bearing width dimension. Dimension 30.20 mm (1.189 in).

Calculation:

Calculation:

10. Install determined shim (7) 1.10 mm (.043 in).

11. Lower the temperature of bearing outer race (8) and install it in the housing using Tooling (C).

12. Lower the temperature of second bearing outer race and drive it firmly against shoulder using Tooling (D).

13. Heat tapered roller bearing (9) to 135 °C (275 °F) and place it firmly against shoulder.

The following is adjustment of rolling torque.

14. Place Tooling (E) on shaft.

15. Temporarily install flange, yoke, washer and nut. Use a torque wrench to determine the rolling torque. Rolling torque should be 1 to 2 N·m (9 to 18 lb in).

16. Remove nut, washer, yoke and flange. Remove Tooling (E) from the pinion gear. Measure the distance from the end of the three measuring pins to the back face of the measuring ring. Record the three dimensions. Find the average of the three dimensions. The average dimension is the required thickness of ring Tooling (E). Average dimension 15.85 mm (.624 in).

17. Install spacing ring 15.85 mm (.624 in) on shaft. Install in axle housing and check rolling torque again. If not correct repeat steps 14 thru 16.

18. Install assembled shaft in axle housing and install seal. Use sealing compound. Grease shaft seal in the zone of the sealing and dust lip. Install yoke, washer and self-locking nut. Tighten to a torque of 450 N·m (330 lb ft).

End By:

b. remove differential
