Steering Cylinder (Rear) (All Wheel Steer)

Usage:

Disassemble Steering Cylinder (Rear) (All Wheel Steer)

Start By:

a. remove tires and rims

Fluid Spillage Containment

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTE: For photographic purposes, the axle has been remove from the machine.

NOTE: The left and right axle housing assemblies are identical. All operations covered in this section must be performed on both the right and the left axle housing assemblies.

1. Remove cotter key (1) and remove castle nut (2) from tie rod end.

2. Using tooling (A) push tie rod end out of the bore of the steering knuckle hull.

3. Using tooling (B) and (C), separate tie rod (3) from piston rod (4). Remove rod on the other side same as steps 1 through 3.

NOTE: It may be necessary to to heat the end of piston rod (4) to loosen the chemical locking compound used during assembly.

4. Remove four bolts (5) and separate guide (6) from cylinder (7) and piston rod (4).

5. Pull piston (8) and piston rod (4) out of cylinder (7).

6. Remove O-ring (9) from cylinder (7).

7. Remove four bolts (11) and remove guide (10) and cylinder (7).

8. Remove two guide rings (12), one grooved ring (13) and one scraper ring (14) from each of the two guides (6) and (10).

NOTE: It may be necessary to destroy several of the rings to remove.

NOTE: The left and right axle housing assemblies are identical. All operations covered in this section must be performed on both the right and the left axle housing assemblies.

1. Assemble each of the two guides (1) and (2) with two guide rings (3), a grooved ring (4) and a scrapper ring (4).

2. Install O-ring (6) onto cylinder (5) and install cylinder (5) back into housing.

3. Install previously assembled guide (2) onto cylinder (5) until cylinder is touching the bottom of guide (2).

4. Install four bolts (7) and tighten to a torque of 185 N·m (136 lb ft).

5. Install O-ring (8) onto the center of piston (10). Install two piston guides (9) in the grooves in piston (10) in both sides of O-ring (8).

6. Lubricate O-ring (8) and piston guide (9). Install assembled piston (10) into cylinder (5). Apply pressure inward on both of the guides (9) so that they enter the bore of the cylinder.

7. Determine the shim requirement of the steering cylinder by means of the following steps:

a. Determine dimension (l) by measuring from the flange mounted surface to the contact face of guide (1). Example dimension (l) 33.6 mm.

b. Tap cylinder (5) into the guide that was previously installed to insure that it is fully seated.

c. Using a depth gauge as shown, determine dimension (II) from the end face of cylinder (5) to the flange mounting surface. Exampledimension (II) 32.2 mm.

EXAMPLE

8. Install proper shim (12) into guide (1).

9. Install O-ring (13) into groove on piston (5).

10. Install piston guide (1) onto cylinder and secure with four bolts (14). Tighten bolts (14) to a torque of 185 N·m (136 lb ft).

11. Apply some 9S3263 Threadlocker to the threads of tie rod (15) and install it onto the end of piston rod (11). Using tooling (A) and (B), tighten tie rod to a torque of 350 N·m (259 lb ft).

NOTE: One manner to achieve the necessary torque on tie rod (15) is to hold piston rod (11) with tooling (B). Install tooling 1U7608 chain wrench around tie rod (15) and tighten with a torque wrench until the necessary torque has been obtained.

12. Install tie rod (15) to steering knuckle hull. Secure tie rod with castle nut (16). Tighten castle nut to a torque of 250 N·m (185 lb ft).

Adjust the wheel alignment of the axle as follows:

a. Center the steering piston inside the steering cylinder. This can be done by measuring the exposed piston rod (11) on each side and moving the steering knuckle hull so that the measurement is the same on both sides. See the illustration above. A1 is identical to A2.

NOTE: After this measurement is confirmed, mark the piston rod with a felt marker. From this point on the piston can not move.

b. Install a straight edge on the axle hubs.

c. Measure the distance from one straight edge to the other on one side of the axle (B1). Record this measurement.

d. Move the straight edge to the other side of the axle hubs. Measure from straight edge to straight edge, measuring the other side of the axle (B2).

e. These two dimensions must be identical.

f. Loosen clamping collar (17) on each side of axle and turn tie rod until measurement is identical.

g. Turn both hubs 180 degrees and repeat the measurement procedure.

h. After all measurements are completed and correct, tighten clamping collar.

13. Adjust the steering stop screw (18) on both sides of the axle. This can be done in one of two different manners.

a. Adjust each steering stop screw so that the distance from the steering knuckle hull to the crown of the steering stop screw is 38 mm (1.5 in).

b. Turn the steering knuckle hull all the way in one direction. Measure the distance of the short end of the piston rod. Measure from the face of guide (1) to the front edge of tie rod (15). Move the steering knuckle hull until a distance of 10 mm (.4 in) is achieved. Adjust the steering stop screw out until contact is made, then lock the screw using the locking nut.

c. Perform the same operation on the other side of the axle.

14. Check the tightness of the steering and check for hydraulic steering leaks in the following manner:

a. Install tooling (C) and attach to one side of the steering cylinder.

b. Apply pressure until cylinder has completely extended and steering stop screw is touching the stop. Check the pressure gauge on tooling (E). Insure that pressure is not dropping.

c. Check to insure that there is no fluid leakage on the steering cylinder and that there are no leaks in the cylinder rod guide.

d. After successfully testing one side, slowly release pressure and drain the side that was tested. Repeat the test on the other side.

NOTE: Place a towel over the top of the steering port that was tested first to prevent the high pressure discharge of hydraulic oil that may remain in the cylinder as the steering piston moves the other direction.
